The role

Summary

Zapier is seeking a Senior Applied AI Engineer to build and evolve the core AI platform infrastructure that powers machine learning and generative AI development across the company. The ideal candidate will create scalable, secure, and production-ready systems for LLM Ops and ML Ops, focusing on improving model access, monitoring, evaluation, and deployment.

What you'll do

AI Platform Development: Build and evolve shared AI platform capabilities that serve as the foundation for machine learning and generative AI development
LLM Ops Improvement: Enhance LLM and ML Ops capabilities, including observability, monitoring, evaluation, and deployment workflows
System Design: Design and implement systems to measure and improve performance, reliability, safety, and cost efficiency of AI-powered experiences
Best Practices Standardization: Identify tooling gaps and standardize best practices for building, deploying, and monitoring AI-driven experiences
Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with product, infrastructure, and data teams to ensure AI components are reusable and well-documented

What we look for

Technical

ML Systems7+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years in distributed, scalable, cloud-based ML/AI systems
Platform Engineering2+ years of experience in LLM Ops, ML Ops, or adjacent platform/infrastructure work
Developer ToolingExperience building shared services, internal platforms, and reusable developer tooling

Education

Computer ScienceBachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field preferred

Experience

ML ArchitectureFull lifecycle experience in building, testing, deploying, and scaling ML/LLM architectures
Trade-off AnalysisAbility to identify and document trade-offs in AI/ML system development
Developer ExperienceDeep understanding of creating powerful yet easily adoptable platforms

Required skills

Machine Learning InfrastructureExperience building distributed, scalable, cloud-based ML/AI systems in production environments
LLM OpsExpertise in model access, inference reliability, observability, and production monitoring
Platform EngineeringExperience building shared services, internal platforms, and developer tooling
