Role

What you'll do.

Join 1Password as a Developer on the Device Trust Reliability team to build and maintain critical authentication services powering enterprise access decisions. You'll work on backend systems with a strong reliability focus, improving observability, operational excellence, and safe evolution of production services that handle millions of daily authentications. This role demands expertise in distributed systems, Ruby on Rails, and modern DevOps practices, with opportunities to influence incident response, infrastructure automation, and cross-functional security initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Build and Enhance Device Trust Services: Develop and maintain backend services that power the Device Trust authentication platform, which sits directly in critical authentication flows for over 180,000 businesses. Write production-grade code that handles millions of daily device authentications while maintaining high availability and performance standards critical to enterprise security operations.
  • Improve System Reliability and Observability: Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting strategies using tools like Datadog to enhance visibility into service health. Systematically identify bottlenecks, latency issues, and failure points in distributed systems, then architect and deploy solutions that increase resilience and reduce mean time to recovery (MTTR) during incidents.
  • Establish Operational Excellence Practices: Drive adoption of safer change management procedures, infrastructure-as-code practices with Terraform, and automated deployment pipelines. Document operational runbooks, create alerting policies, and establish best practices for managing critical infrastructure in Kubernetes environments.
  • Participate in Incident Response and Post-Incident Learning: Actively engage in on-call rotations and incident response for the Device Trust service. Conduct blameless post-mortems, identify root causes of production issues, and implement permanent solutions that prevent recurrence and strengthen system resilience through data-driven improvements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration and Risk Mitigation: Partner with engineers across Device Trust, Platform, Security, and other teams to identify security and operational risks. Work to reduce friction in deployment processes, improve the customer experience, and ensure device posture decisions are made on reliable, auditable systems.
  • Own End-to-End Problem Solving: Take full ownership of scoped problems from initial investigation through implementation and follow-up validation. Communicate progress transparently, raise blockers early, and ensure stakeholders understand technical outcomes and business impact through clear documentation and regular updates.
  • Infrastructure and Deployment Automation: Work across cloud infrastructure, container orchestration, networking, and deployment systems. Design and implement infrastructure changes that support safe, rapid iteration while maintaining the reliability standards required for critical authentication services.

At 1Password, we’re building the foundation for a safe, productive digital future. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security by ensuring every identity is authentic, every application sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We innovated the market-leading enterprise password manager and pioneered Unified Access Management, a new cybersecurity category built for the way people and AI agents work today. As one of the most loved brands in cybersecurity, we take a human-centric approach in everything from product strategy to user experience. Over 180,000 businesses, from Fortune 100 leaders to the world’s most innovative AI companies, trust 1Password to help their teams securely adopt the SaaS and AI tools they need to do their best work.

If you're excited about the opportunity to contribute to the digital safety of millions, to work alongside a team of curious, driven individuals, and to solve hard problems in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, then we want to hear from you. Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.

We are looking for an Intermediate Developer to join the Device Trust team and help us improve the reliability and operational excellence of the systems behind the Device Trust authentication service. This is a software engineering role with a strong reliability focus. You will write and maintain production code, improve how our services are operated, and help make a critical applications path safer, more observable, and easier to evolve.

Device Trust authentication is an important component of our customers’ authentication flows, helping organizations make device posture part of their access decisions. Because it sits directly in that path, reliability is a first-class engineering concern. The service is already relied upon by customers every day, and in this role you’ll help us continue raising the bar through stronger resilience, observability, operational practices, and safe evolution of the system.

How we’re using AI today

Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we're looking for:

  • You have 2+ years of experience in software development.

  • Experience working with backend services, application programming interfaces (APIs), distributed systems, or other software where reliability and availability matter.

  • Take ownership of scoped problems from investigation through implementation and follow-up.

  • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails (Rails).

  • Use observability tools to understand system health and investigate issues; experience with Datadog is valuable.

  • Care about testing, maintainability, and clarity in both code and documentation.

  • Communicate clearly by sharing progress, raising blockers early, and helping stakeholders understand outcomes.

Bonus points for:

  • Familiarity with or exposure to Kubernetes.

  • Experience with Datadog.

  • Experience with Terraform.

What you can expect:

  • Build and improve the services that power Device Trust.

  • Improve the reliability, observability, and operability of production systems through software, automation, and thoughtful engineering practices.

  • Work across application code, service dependencies, cloud infrastructure, networking, deployment systems, and operational tooling.

  • Help establish safer ways to make and validate changes to critical systems.

  • Participate in incident response and post-incident learning, turning operational lessons into lasting improvements.

  • Partner with engineers across Device Trust, Platform, Security, and other teams to identify risks, reduce operational friction, and improve the customer experience.

We’re looking for individuals who are proven experts in their fields, as well as those who are highly adaptable, can thrive in ambiguity and through change, are curious, and above all deliver results.

How we work with AI
We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology—including AI—to achieve our mission. We want team members at all levels to take the approach of actively learning AI best practices, identifying opportunities to apply AI in meaningful ways, and driving innovative solutions in their daily work. Embracing the future of AI isn't just encouraged—it's an essential part of how we will be successful at 1Password.

This approach extends to our hiring process—candidates are welcome to use AI tools responsibly and thoughtfully during the application process. To us, this means we do ask that you join live interviews without using AI tools so we can get to know how you communicate, solve problems, and collaborate with others.
