The role

Summary

Benchling is seeking an experienced Agentic AI Engineer to lead the development of enterprise-level AI systems within their Intelligence Engineering & Enablement team. The ideal candidate will drive technical direction for innovative AI solutions, build production-ready systems, and enable AI capabilities across the organization with a focus on biotechnology innovation.

What you'll do

Technical Architecture: Define foundational architecture for enterprise agentic AI, including orchestration, agent frameworks, tool integrations, and observability
Production Development: Write production code, develop CI/CD infrastructure, and graduate AI prototypes into hardened, production-grade systems
Enterprise Security: Implement multi-tenant isolation, secrets management, audit logging, encryption, and role-based access controls
Internal Enablement: Coach power users, develop internal developer experience, and create templates and SDKs for safe AI implementation
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Data, Analytics & Systems team and department leaders to transform workflows and leverage existing capabilities

What we look for

Technical

System Design7+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong systems design fundamentals
AI IntegrationProven experience building production systems integrating LLMs and agentic patterns

Education

Computer ScienceBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Experience

AI EngineeringDemonstrable track record of building platforms or product areas from scratch
Enterprise AIExperience in developing AI solutions in regulated or security-sensitive environments

Skills

Required skills

LLM IntegrationHands-on experience building production systems that integrate with Large Language Models and agentic patterns
Systems ArchitectureStrong systems design fundamentals and ability to design enterprise-grade AI solutions
Programming LanguagesProficiency in at least two of Python, TypeScript/Node.js, Go
AI FrameworksExpertise with LLM APIs, agentic frameworks, and AI tooling
Enterprise SecurityExperience with security fundamentals including encryption, access controls, and audit logging

Nice to have

Biotech BackgroundPrior experience in enterprise SaaS, life sciences, or biotech
Compliance KnowledgeFamiliarity with SOC 2, HIPAA, or GxP compliance for AI systems
Internal ToolsExperience building internal developer platforms or tools at scale
