Responsibilities

  • Lead Complex End-to-End Projects: Design, implement, and deliver high-impact features across the full technology stack (React + Python). Transform product requirements into scalable architecture and intuitive user experiences, proactively identify technical risks and tradeoffs, and own projects from conception through production deployment serving enterprise biotech customers.
  • Shape Technical Architecture and Strategy: Make foundational engineering decisions that improve system performance, reliability, and scalability across Registry and Inventory offerings. Collaborate with senior engineers to evolve the platform, influence long-term technical direction, and establish patterns that support the company's AI scientist initiative and core enterprise offerings.
  • Drive Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product managers, UX designers, customer success teams, and platform engineering groups to ensure alignment on scientific user needs. Facilitate seamless handoffs between teams, create shared understanding of customer requirements, and translate domain complexity into technical clarity.
  • Own Technical Debt and Code Quality: Proactively identify and address technical debt in critical systems. Lead refactoring initiatives for maintainability and performance, champion infrastructure improvements that boost developer velocity, and establish high standards for testing, documentation, and operational excellence.
  • Architect for Enterprise Performance and Scale: Build systems capable of handling the complexity and massive scale of life sciences R&D operations. Optimize backend performance for data-intensive workflows, enhance frontend responsiveness for rapid scientific iteration, and ensure system reliability for mission-critical research infrastructure.
  • Mentor and Develop Engineering Talent: Serve as technical mentor and knowledge leader for other engineers on the team. Facilitate skill growth through pairing sessions, code reviews, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing. Act as a force multiplier by elevating team capabilities and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • Champion Engineering Excellence: Lead by example in code quality, testing practices, and operational excellence. Conduct thorough code reviews with constructive feedback, establish best practices for version control workflows, and help raise engineering standards across the team.
  • Navigate Domain Ambiguity and Complexity: Operate effectively in a fast-paced biotech R&D environment with evolving scientific requirements and emerging technologies. Rapidly learn new tools, frameworks, and scientific concepts. Help the team adapt to changing priorities while maintaining focus on user impact and data integrity.
  • Drive Ownership and Accountability: Take responsibility for both code quality and business outcomes. Technical

  • Full-Stack Development

    Strong proficiency building scalable systems across the entire technology stack, with hands-on experience in both frontend (React) and backend (Python) development, including API design, database optimization, and system architecture.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related Field

    Formal education in software engineering, computer science, mathematics, or equivalent practical experience demonstrating core computer science knowledge and problem-solving foundations.

Experience

  • 2+ Years Professional Software Engineering

    Minimum 2 years of hands-on professional software engineering experience building production systems, working in collaborative team environments, and shipping features that impact real users.

  • Backend Systems Development

    Demonstrated experience building backend services, APIs, and database-driven applications with attention to performance, reliability, scalability, and data integrity in production environments.

  • Frontend Development

ROLE OVERVIEW

Benchling's Registry and Inventory offerings provide our scientists with a conceptual and physical representation of the entities that are important to their work, offering a balance of flexibility to facilitate rapid creation of entities and validation when data is finalized, providing tooling for the creation of standardized entity names and identifiers, and supporting materials tracking across the containers and plates in use for their research. They are at the core of our enterprise offering, and they are critical to our key initiatives, including antibody discovery.
