Role

What you'll do.

Senior Software Engineer on Mural's Growth & Engagement team, responsible for building customer-facing products, experimentation capabilities, and platforms that drive acquisition, activation, engagement, retention, and monetization. This role combines product engineering with technical leadership, requiring 5+ years of full-stack development experience with modern web technologies (TypeScript, React, Node.js), strong product sense, expertise in A/B testing and feature flagging, and the ability to mentor engineers while balancing customer needs with business objectives in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Build Customer-Facing Growth Features: Architect and implement high-impact features that directly improve customer acquisition, onboarding, activation, engagement, retention, and monetization metrics. Focus on delivering intuitive user experiences that enable customers to discover product value faster and achieve measurable business outcomes.
  • Lead Experimentation and Product Validation: Design, implement, and analyze product experiments using feature flags, A/B testing frameworks, and multi-variant testing strategies. Translate hypotheses into measurable experiments, collect data-driven insights, and use statistical analysis to validate product decisions before full-scale rollouts.
  • Build Analytics Instrumentation and Event Pipelines: Develop reliable event tracking systems, data collection pipelines, and instrumentation that enable cross-functional teams to understand customer behavior patterns. Ensure data quality and accessibility for analytics-driven decision-making across Product, Marketing, and Data teams.
  • Mentor Engineers and Shape Technical Culture: Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, architectural guidance, and knowledge sharing. Help establish engineering practices that promote rapid experimentation, maintain high code quality standards, and enable confident decision-making across the team.
  • Optimize Performance, Reliability, and Scalability: Continuously improve the performance and reliability of critical user journeys in the product. Focus on accessibility compliance, scalability for growing user bases, and operational excellence through observability, monitoring, and proactive issue resolution.
  • Collaborate Across Functional Teams: Work closely with Product Managers, Designers, Data Scientists, Marketing, and Customer Success teams to identify growth opportunities, validate ideas through customer research and experimentation, and translate feedback into technical solutions that drive sustainable business growth.
  • Contribute to Technical Strategy and Roadmap Planning: Participate in architectural decisions, technical design discussions, and long-term platform planning. Contribute engineering perspective to product strategy, identifying technical enablers for business goals and proposing infrastructure improvements that accelerate team velocity.
  • Write High-Quality, Maintainable Code: Deliver well-tested, documented, and maintainable code that follows established patterns and best practices. Participate in thorough code reviews, establish quality standards, and balance technical debt management with feature velocity to ensure sustainable development practices.

  • Full-Stack Web Development

    Strong experience building modern, scalable web applications with proficiency in both frontend and backend technologies. Ability to design and implement complete features from user interface to backend services and database layers.

  • TypeScript Proficiency

    Advanced experience writing TypeScript to build type-safe applications. Understanding of advanced TypeScript patterns, generics, and strong typing practices to catch errors at compile time and improve code maintainability.

  • React Development

    Strong expertise building component-based user interfaces with React, including hooks, state management, performance optimization, and understanding of React's rendering lifecycle and best practices for building accessible, responsive UI.

  • Node.js Backend Development

    Production experience building backend services and APIs with Node.js, including understanding of asynchronous patterns, middleware frameworks (Express, Fastify), and building scalable server-side applications.

  • NoSQL Database Design

    Experience designing and querying document-based databases like MongoDB, including schema design patterns, indexing strategies, aggregation pipelines, and optimization for read-heavy or write-heavy workloads.

  • A/B Testing and Feature Flagging

    Hands-on experience designing, implementing, and analyzing A/B tests and feature flag systems. Understanding of statistical significance, experimentation best practices, and tools for managing feature rollouts safely in production environments.

  • Product Analytics and Event Tracking

    Experience implementing event-driven analytics, building custom instrumentation, and working with analytics platforms. Understanding of event schema design, data quality, and using analytics to derive actionable product insights.

  • System Design and Architecture

    Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts, microservices architecture, API design patterns, caching strategies, database optimization, and scalability considerations for production systems.

  • Testing and Code Quality

    Expertise in testing strategies including unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end testing. Understanding of test coverage goals, debugging techniques, and maintaining code quality through CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.

  • Production Operations and Observability

    Experience operating production systems with strong logging, monitoring, and alerting practices. Understanding of performance profiling, debugging production issues, and implementing observability to reduce mean time to resolution (MTTR).

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related Field

    Formal education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent field providing foundational knowledge in algorithms, data structures, and computer systems. Equivalent professional experience may substitute for formal degree requirement.

Experience

  • 5+ Years Professional Software Engineering

    Minimum 5 years of demonstrated professional experience as a Software Engineer building, shipping, and operating production software systems at scale. Track record of delivering customer-facing features and managing the complete development lifecycle.

  • Product Engineering and Growth Focus

    Experience working on Growth/Engagement teams or in product engineering roles with direct impact on customer metrics. Understanding of customer lifecycle stages (acquisition, activation, engagement, retention, monetization) and how engineering drives business outcomes.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

    Proven ability to work effectively with Product Managers, Designers, Data Analysts, and other engineers. Track record of translating customer feedback and business requirements into technical solutions and collaborating on ambiguous, high-impact projects.

  • Technical Leadership and Mentoring

    Experience mentoring junior and mid-level engineers, influencing technical decisions, and contributing to engineering culture. Demonstrated ability to establish best practices, conduct effective code reviews, and help teammates grow technically.

  • Ownership and Initiative

    Track record of taking ownership of ambiguous, complex problems and driving projects from concept through design, implementation, testing, and delivery. Demonstrated ability to make trade-offs, unblock teammates, and drive projects to completion.

  • AI-Assisted Development Tools

    Experience leveraging modern AI-assisted development tools and workflows (such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar) to improve code quality, engineering productivity, and delivery velocity in production environments.

YOUR MISSION

 As a Senior Software Engineer on the Growth & Engagement team, you'll build the products, platforms, and experimentation capabilities that help customers discover value faster and achieve more with our product. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and other Engineering teams to identify opportunities, validate ideas through experimentation, and deliver experiences that improve customer outcomes and drive sustainable business growth.

Beyond shipping features, you'll help shape the technical direction of the team, mentor other engineers, and establish engineering practices that enable us to experiment confidently and move quickly.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design, build, and maintain customer-facing features that improve acquisition, activation, engagement, retention, and monetization.

  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Data, Marketing, and Customer Success to identify growth opportunities and translate customer feedback, product analytics, and experimentation to guide product decisions.

  • Design, implement, and analyze experiments using feature flags, A/B testing, and analytics to validate hypotheses and measure customer and business impact.

  • Build reliable instrumentation and event pipelines that help teams understand customer behavior and make informed product decisions.

  • Write high-quality, maintainable code while contributing to architecture, technical design, and long-term platform improvements.

  • Improve the performance, reliability, accessibility, and scalability of critical user journeys.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  •  5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer building and operating production software.

  • Strong proficiency building modern web applications. Experience with TypeScript, React, Node.js, and MongoDB or similar technologies, with the ability to become productive quickly.

  • Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and the broader AI tooling ecosystem and the ability to quickly learn emerging AI technologies.

  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools and workflows to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and delivery.

  • Experience building customer-facing products in close partnership with Product and Design teams.

  • A product mindset with the ability to balance customer needs, technical tradeoffs, and business goals.

  • Experience using analytics and data to inform engineering and product decisions.

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including system design, testing, observability, and operational excellence.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions across cross-functional teams.
