What you'll do.
Join OpenAI's Consumer Devices team as an Android Systems Engineer to build the next generation of AI-native mobile experiences. This role requires deep expertise in Android platform architecture, system-level APIs, and device integration to create context-aware experiences that leverage AI across apps and device capabilities. You'll work end-to-end from prototyping to production, collaborating with product, AI, and backend teams to turn emerging AI capabilities into reliable, scalable consumer products.
Responsibilities
- Build deeply integrated Android experiences: Design and implement product experiences that take full advantage of Android platform capabilities, moving beyond traditional application-level development to leverage system-level integrations and framework APIs for context-aware AI functionality.
- Work across the Android platform stack: Develop against Android framework APIs, system services, application lifecycle and background execution primitives, inter-process communication (IPC), permissions models, notifications, intents, and other advanced platform capabilities to enable sophisticated AI-powered features.
- Unlock and integrate device capabilities: Identify, evaluate, and implement device-level capabilities including audio, camera, sensors, connectivity, location services, notifications, credential management, and other hardware signals to create context-aware, responsive AI experiences that understand user intent and environment.
- Build agentic mobile experiences: Develop systems that enable AI assistants to help users complete multi-step tasks, coordinate actions across applications and services, and intelligently manage device functionality to deliver cohesive, multi-app experiences that feel seamless and natural.
- Create scalable platform abstractions: Design and implement well-architected platform layers and reusable components that abstract device-specific capabilities, supporting multiple Android devices, OEMs, form factors, and product experiences while maintaining consistency and performance across the ecosystem.
- Prototype and explore new capabilities: Rapidly prototype and evaluate emerging Android APIs, device features, and interaction models to understand technical feasibility, identify innovative opportunities, and inform product direction in the evolving space of AI-integrated mobile experiences.
- Own experiences end-to-end: Take full ownership of features from early technical exploration and architecture through implementation, rigorous testing, production launch, and ongoing iteration based on user feedback and performance metrics.
- Optimize for reliability and performance: Ensure experiences remain fast, power-efficient, resilient, and reliable across the diverse Android device ecosystem, proactively addressing fragmentation challenges, optimizing battery consumption, and maintaining consistent performance across different hardware configurations.
- Design with privacy and security as foundational: Carefully handle permissions, user data, device access, authentication, and system capabilities while maintaining transparent user control and trust through thoughtful security architecture and clear privacy practices.
- Collaborate across disciplines: Work closely with product management, design, research, backend infrastructure, AI/ML, systems engineers, and external OEM partners to translate emerging AI capabilities into cohesive, user-centric consumer experiences.
- Drive platform innovation and stay current: Monitor new Android releases, emerging APIs, device capabilities, and broader mobile ecosystem developments to identify opportunities for entirely new product experiences and maintain architectural excellence.

Technical
Android platform architecture expertise
Deep knowledge of Android framework internals, system services, application lifecycle, process management, background execution constraints, memory management, and how applications interact with the underlying operating system.
Advanced Android API proficiency
Strong expertise with Android framework APIs beyond basic UI development, including system-level APIs, permissions models, inter-process communication (IPC), background execution primitives, sensors, audio/video integration, and device capabilities.
AOSP and device software experience
Hands-on experience with Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Android framework internals, system applications, privileged APIs, custom device software, or OEM-specific Android integrations and customizations.
Hardware-software integration skills
Demonstrated experience integrating software with hardware capabilities and debugging problems that cross application, operating-system, and device-level boundaries, including sensor integration, connectivity, and hardware device communication.

Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
Formal education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience demonstrating foundational computer science knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Experience
Shipping high-quality Android applications
Substantial track record building and shipping high-quality, production-grade Android software used by real customers at significant scale, with demonstrated ability to navigate quality requirements and user expectations.
Platform and systems-level Android development
Several years of professional experience developing Android software at the platform and systems level, beyond traditional application development, with deep familiarity of Android internals and framework architecture.
Cross-platform and emerging technology integration
Experience identifying and implementing emerging platform capabilities, integrating new technologies into existing applications, and staying current with platform developments to leverage cutting-edge features.
0-to-1 product development
Experience driving product development from concept through production in ambiguous, rapidly evolving environments where established patterns don't yet exist and technical/product approaches must be developed collaboratively.

About the Team
The Consumer Devices team is building a new generation of AI-native experiences that bring OpenAI’s technology closer to people throughout their day.
We are exploring how AI can become deeply integrated into the devices people already use—understanding context, helping users accomplish tasks, coordinating across apps and services, and making use of capabilities that are uniquely available on the device.
Our work spans software, devices, platform technologies, and strategic partnerships. We operate as a highly collaborative, fast-moving team focused on turning ambitious ideas into reliable products that can reach people at significant scale.
About the Role
As an Android Systems Engineer, you will help define and build the Android platform capabilities behind the next generation of AI-powered consumer experiences.
This is not a traditional application-only Android role. You will work across the Android stack, using system-level APIs, device capabilities, platform integrations, and OEM-specific functionality to create experiences that would be difficult or impossible to build as a conventional mobile application.
You will help determine what becomes possible when an AI assistant is deeply integrated with a mobile device: how it understands what is happening, interacts naturally with the user, connects across apps and services, and helps complete multi-step tasks.
You will work closely with product, design, AI, backend, platform, and external device partners to take new concepts from prototype to production. The role requires strong technical judgment, product intuition, and comfort navigating areas where the platform, APIs, and product patterns are still evolving.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of four days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Build deeply integrated Android experiences: Design and implement product experiences that take advantage of Android platform capabilities.
