Summary

Forward Deployed Engineers at OpenAI lead end-to-end production deployments of frontier large language models and generative AI systems for strategic customers, operating at the intersection of customer delivery and core platform development. This role combines technical architecture, full-stack development, and customer partnership to transform research breakthroughs into measurable business impact, requiring 5+ years of engineering experience with production-grade code proficiency in Python, JavaScript, and LLM systems. You'll own discovery through production rollout while embedding deeply with customer teams to gather field feedback that informs product and model improvements across OpenAI's platform.

What you'll do

Own End-to-End Technical Delivery: Lead complete deployment lifecycle from initial prototype and technical scoping through stable production systems for multiple concurrent customer deployments. Make critical trade-off decisions between scope, speed, and quality while protecting delivery timelines and ensuring production-grade system reliability.
Build Full-Stack Production Systems: Design and implement full-stack systems that integrate frontier AI models into customer workflows. Write production-grade code across frontend and backend layers, participate in code reviews, and establish scalable architectural patterns that prioritize customer value delivery and system observability.
Customer Partnership and Adoption: Embed closely with customer engineering and domain teams to understand business requirements, guide adoption of deployed systems, and remove technical blockers. Serve as the primary technical liaison between OpenAI platform teams and customers, translating business needs into technical solutions.
Scope Work and Sequence Delivery: Conduct discovery sessions to define project scope, identify technical risks early, and sequence work streams to optimize delivery velocity. Adjust plans proactively based on field learnings while maintaining clarity across multi-functional teams including Product, Research, Partnerships, GRC, and Security.
Contribute and Code as Needed: Directly contribute code when technical progress or architectural clarity depends on hands-on development. Maintain technical depth and hands-on involvement in critical system components while balancing leadership and coordination responsibilities.
Codify and Scale Working Patterns: Document deployment patterns, best practices, and reusable building blocks into tools, playbooks, and SDKs that enable other teams to accelerate their own deployments. Systematize learnings to improve deployment velocity and reduce toil for future projects.
Provide Field Feedback to Product and Research: Share detailed field observations and customer feedback about frontier model behavior, capabilities, and limitations. Feed production learnings back to Research and Product teams to directly influence model roadmaps and platform prioritization based on real-world deployment impact.
Lead with Clarity and Follow-Through: Maintain team momentum through clear communication, decisive decision-making under ambiguity, and consistent follow-through on commitments. Model calm judgment when stakes are high and provide the clarity teams need to move quickly and confidently.
