Role

What you'll do.

As a Forward Deployed Engineer at OpenAI's Tokyo office, you'll lead end-to-end production deployments of frontier AI models alongside strategic customers, bridging research breakthroughs with real-world business impact. This role demands ownership of discovery, technical scoping, system design, implementation, and production rollout while working cross-functionally with product, research, and customer teams. You'll need 5+ years of full-stack engineering experience with proven customer-facing delivery skills, fluency in both Japanese and English, and expertise in building LLM-powered systems in ambiguous, high-stakes environments.

Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Technical Delivery Leadership: Own complete technical delivery lifecycle for multiple AI model deployments, from initial prototype development through stable production systems. Drive discovery sessions with customer stakeholders to understand technical requirements, translate business objectives into engineering roadmaps, and ensure successful production rollout with measurable adoption metrics.
  • Full-Stack System Architecture and Implementation: Design and build production-grade full-stack systems that deliver immediate customer value while generating actionable insights for model and product improvement. Write clean, maintainable code across frontend and backend components, conduct thorough code reviews, and establish best practices that scale across multiple customer deployments.
  • Customer Collaboration and Adoption Enablement: Embed deeply with customer engineering and domain teams to understand domain-specific workflows, articulate technical trade-offs clearly, and guide successful adoption of deployed systems. Serve as technical liaison between OpenAI and customer organizations, translating between business objectives and engineering constraints to maximize workflow impact.
  • Project Scoping and Delivery Management: Define technical scope for complex projects, sequence delivery phases strategically, and identify blockers early to maintain momentum. Make sound trade-off decisions between scope, speed, and quality under pressure, adjust plans proactively to protect delivery timelines, and keep cross-functional teams aligned through clear communication and reliable follow-through.
  • AI Model Behavior and Performance Evaluation: Conduct comprehensive evaluation of model behavior in production environments, collect empirical feedback on frontier model capabilities and limitations, and synthesize field learnings into structured feedback that directly influences Research and Product roadmaps. Establish evaluation frameworks that measure real-world performance beyond benchmark metrics.
  • Knowledge Codification and Tool Development: Distill working patterns, deployment patterns, and lessons learned from complex deployments into reusable tools, playbooks, and building blocks that enable other engineers to execute faster. Document architectural decisions, scaling strategies, and integration patterns to build organizational knowledge and accelerate future deployments.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration and Communication: Partner effectively with Product, Research, Partnerships, GRC, Security, and GTM teams to navigate organizational complexity and remove friction from deployments. Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders, provide strategic input to product discussions, and ensure compliance and security requirements are integrated throughout the development process.

Fluency in both Japanese and English (spoken and written) at professional level. Required for customer interactions, internal team collaboration, and participation in cross-functional meetings. Candidates must be prepared for interviews conducted in both languages.

  • Production System Design and Reliability

Understanding of how to architect systems for scale, reliability, and maintainability. Includes experience with monitoring, alerting, graceful degradation, and incident response. Must include comfort with uncertainty and ability to ship robust systems on real timelines.

  • Strategic Decision-Making Under Pressure

Ability to simplify complex technical decisions, identify core trade-offs, and make sound decisions quickly with incomplete information. Must maintain clarity and judgment when stakes are high, communicate rationale clearly, and execute reliably on decisions.

Preferred

  • Solutions Architecture or Solutions Engineering Background

    Nice to have

Prior experience in customer-focused technical roles such as Solutions Architect, Solutions Engineer, or Pre-Sales Engineer. This background demonstrates ability to communicate with non-technical stakeholders, translate business requirements into technical specs, and manage complex customer relationships.

  • Experience Scaling Teams or Mentoring Junior Engineers

    Nice to have

Demonstrated ability to codify working patterns, document approaches, and enable others to solve problems independently. Shows understanding of how to build organizational knowledge and scale impact beyond individual contributions.

  • Startup or High-Growth Company Experience

    Nice to have

Background working in fast-moving environments where priorities shift quickly, processes are lighter-weight, and individual engineers have outsized impact. Demonstrates comfort with ambiguity, willingness to wear multiple hats, and track record of shipping quickly.

  • Experience with Large Language Models or Generative AI

    Nice to have

Specific exposure to LLM platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face, etc.), familiarity with different model architectures, understanding of fine-tuning or RAG patterns, or background in machine learning systems more broadly. Shows understanding of unique challenges in AI system design.
