Summary

OpenAI seeks a Forward Deployed Software Engineer in Dublin to partner with enterprise customers and transform AI research breakthroughs into scalable production systems. This customer-facing full-stack engineering role combines direct customer engagement, systems architecture, and API integration with OpenAI's cutting-edge AI platform to solve complex business challenges at scale. With 7+ years of professional experience required, you'll operate at the intersection of customer delivery and platform development, building end-to-end solutions while providing valuable product feedback to advance OpenAI's capabilities.

What you'll do

Customer Engagement and Requirements Analysis: Embed deeply with strategic enterprise customers to understand their business challenges, technical requirements, and success metrics. Conduct comprehensive discovery sessions, document business context, and translate complex customer needs into actionable technical specifications that guide solution architecture and development.
Full-Stack Solution Design and Architecture: Design, architect, and develop end-to-end solutions leveraging OpenAI's APIs and enterprise infrastructure. Create scalable system architectures following experiment-driven, iterative approaches. Document architectural decisions, design patterns, and technical trade-offs to guide implementation across proof-of-concept prototypes and production deployments.
Hands-On Development and Integration: Write production-grade full-stack code implementing frontend interfaces, backend services, and API integrations. Work directly with customers' technical teams on their infrastructure, providing hands-on support, code reviews, and technical guidance. Ensure seamless integration of OpenAI APIs while maintaining security, performance, and scalability standards.
Project Planning and Delivery Management: Prepare detailed scopes of work, project plans, and timelines for both proof-of-concept prototypes and full production deployments. Track project progress, manage technical risks, communicate status to stakeholders, and drive projects to completion while maintaining quality standards and customer satisfaction.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Product Feedback: Collaborate seamlessly with Sales, Solutions Engineering, Solutions Architects, Customer Success Managers, Product, Research, and Applied teams to ensure project success and customer satisfaction. Synthesize customer feedback and real-world usage patterns to provide actionable insights that inform product development and improve OpenAI's platform capabilities.
Knowledge Management and Team Scaling: Contribute to internal knowledge bases by codifying best practices, documenting implementation patterns, and sharing insights gained from customer engagements. Create reusable abstractions, reference architectures, and technical documentation that accelerate delivery speed and improve quality across all Forward Deployed Engineering engagements.

Full-Stack Web DevelopmentProficiency building end-to-end web applications including frontend interfaces, backend APIs, and database systems. Ability to architect and implement scalable, production-grade software across all application layers.
API Design and IntegrationStrong experience integrating and building upon third-party APIs, particularly experience working with AI/ML APIs or complex service integrations. Ability to design robust API clients and handle asynchronous communication patterns.

Education

Computer Science or Related FieldBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating mastery of computer science fundamentals.

Experience

Senior Full-Stack Engineering (7+ years)Minimum 7 years of professional full-stack engineering experience in relevant roles at technology and product-driven companies. This should exclude internships and include substantive contributions to production systems serving real customers.
Customer-Facing Technical ExperienceHighly desirable background working directly with enterprise customers on technical solutions, implementations, or integrations. Experience communicating complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and managing customer expectations.
Startup or Founding ExperiencePlus factor: Experience as a founder or early-stage engineer at a startup who has built products from inception. This demonstrates ability to move fast, make trade-offs, and deliver impact with limited resources.

Required skills

Python or Node.jsProficiency in modern backend programming languages commonly used for API development and system implementation. Experience building scalable backend services and microservices.
React, Vue, or AngularExpertise building responsive, interactive frontend applications with modern JavaScript frameworks. Understanding of component architecture, state management, and user experience patterns.
PostgreSQL or MySQLStrong hands-on experience designing schemas, writing optimized queries, and managing relational database systems in production environments.
