The role

Summary

OpenAI's Financial Engineering team is seeking a Frontend Engineer to build the billing platforms powering ChatGPT, GPT-5, and their API products. The role involves creating scalable UI components, AI-powered billing workflows, and internal tooling for finance teams managing subscriptions and enterprise pricing at global scale.

What you'll do

UI Component Development: Create scalable, reusable UI components and patterns that support a wide range of billing use cases across OpenAI's product portfolio
Full-Stack Collaboration: Partner closely with backend engineers to deliver end-to-end billing capabilities spanning subscriptions, usage-based pricing, and enterprise offerings
Internal Tool Development: Build tools and surfaces that allow Finance, Sales, Support, and Go-To-Market teams to manage and reason about billing data efficiently
AI-Powered Feature Creation: Create AI-powered features for billing workflows and platform tooling to automate repetitive tasks, surface insights, and improve decision-making
Frontend Architecture: Help define frontend architecture, standards, and patterns for a shared billing platform used by teams across OpenAI
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with Product, Data, Finance, Go-To-Market, and Engineering partners to translate ambiguous requirements into clear, high-quality interfaces

Frontend DevelopmentStrong frontend engineering experience building and maintaining production-grade web applications with emphasis on usability, scalability, and maintainability

Education

Bachelor's DegreeBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred
Equivalent ExperienceEquivalent professional experience in lieu of formal education considered

Experience

Web Application Development3-5 years of experience building complex web applications in production environments
Payments/Billing ExperienceExperience in payments, billing, or monetization systems considered a strong bonus
Cross-Team CollaborationProven ability to engage with various partners, particularly those outside of engineering

JavaScript/TypeScriptExpert-level proficiency in modern JavaScript and TypeScript for frontend development
React EcosystemAdvanced knowledge of React, hooks, state management, and component architecture
HTML/CSSStrong skills in semantic HTML and modern CSS including responsive design and accessibility
