Summary

OpenAI is seeking a Protection Scientist Engineer to join their Integrity and Investigations team, focusing on proactively identifying and mitigating potential abuses of AI products. The role involves designing sophisticated monitoring systems, investigating critical escalations, and developing robust safety mechanisms to ensure responsible AI deployment.

What you'll do

Abuse Monitoring Development: Scope and implement comprehensive abuse monitoring requirements for new AI product launches, ensuring robust safety mechanisms are in place from the initial deployment.
Monitoring Process Optimization: Improve and automate existing product monitoring operations, developing approaches to streamline and enhance detection capabilities.
Harm Detection Systems: Prototype and mature production-ready systems for detecting, reviewing, and enforcing actions against major potential AI product abuses.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product, Policy, Operations, Investigative, and Engineering teams to understand key risks and develop comprehensive mitigation strategies.
Critical Escalation Response: Investigate and resolve critical escalations, especially those not caught by existing safety systems, requiring deep product and data understanding.

Programming SkillsProficiency in Python and SQL for technical analysis and detection
Data EngineeringExperience building core data tables, writing production data pipelines, and understanding machine learning principles
Machine LearningPractical experience with language models and scaling automated processes

Education

Technical DegreeBachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Professional ExperienceMinimum 4 years of technical analysis and detection experience
Trust and SafetyBackground in trust and safety, with experience working with policy, enforcement, and engineering teams
