Role

What you'll do.

Backend software engineer specializing in enterprise API platform infrastructure at OpenAI. This role requires 9+ years of backend engineering expertise with deep systems knowledge across authentication, identity, streaming systems, and distributed database infrastructure. You'll lead cross-functional initiatives shipping critical enterprise controls capabilities while partnering closely with product, security, and go-to-market teams to build developer-facing APIs that scale securely for enterprises running mission-critical applications on OpenAI's infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Backend Product Ownership: Own and drive complete backend platform capabilities spanning authentication and identity systems, service account and API key management, secure networking infrastructure, compliance controls, observability platforms, and operational workflows. Ensure each component integrates seamlessly while maintaining enterprise security standards and operational reliability for mission-critical deployments.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership and Alignment: Partner strategically with Product, go-to-market, security, infrastructure, and customer teams to identify enterprise needs, shape technical roadmaps, and lead large-scale initiatives from discovery through design, launch, and continuous iteration. Act as technical liaison translating complex business requirements into robust engineering solutions.
  • Developer Experience API Design: Design and build developer-facing APIs with exceptional attention to system behavior, configuration interfaces, error handling mechanisms, secure defaults, and audit capabilities. Create intuitive abstractions that lower friction for developers integrating enterprise controls while building trust through clarity and reliability.
  • Distributed Systems Implementation and Operation: Build, deploy, operate, and debug highly reliable backend systems spanning relational and NoSQL databases, event streaming infrastructure, intelligent request routing, microservices architecture, and distributed services. Maintain strong operational ownership with deep understanding of system behavior under production load and failure conditions.
  • Enterprise-Grade Security and Compliance: Implement and maintain security-first architecture for authentication, authorization, key management, and secure networking layers. Design systems with inherent auditability, compliance tracking, and operational controls that enable enterprises to meet regulatory requirements while reducing operational burden.
  • Operational Excellence and Reliability Engineering: Champion reliability standards, DevOps practices, and observability infrastructure that make complex systems feel simple and dependable to end users. Establish metrics-driven approaches to monitoring, alerting, and incident response while continuously improving mean-time-to-recovery for production issues.

  • Distributed Systems Architecture

    Proven expertise designing and implementing distributed backend systems with deep understanding of fault tolerance, consistency models, request routing, and scaling challenges inherent to enterprise API infrastructure.

  • Database Systems Design

    Strong knowledge of both relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and modern data stores (Redis, DynamoDB) with ability to design schemas, optimize queries, implement caching strategies, and handle high-throughput data access patterns.

  • Streaming and Event Infrastructure

    Experience building and operating event-driven systems, message queues, and streaming platforms (Kafka, Pub/Sub, SQS) for real-time data processing, audit trails, and asynchronous workflows at scale.

  • Authentication and Identity Systems

    Deep expertise in OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, service accounts, API key management, PKI, and secure credential handling. Understanding of identity federation, multi-tenancy, and fine-grained authorization models.

  • Backend Programming Languages

    Production-level proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, TypeScript, or similar modern backend languages with mastery of software design principles, systems-level programming, and performance optimization techniques.

  • API Design and Developer Experience

    Experience designing REST APIs or gRPC services with focus on discoverability, error handling, backward compatibility, and documentation. Strong understanding of developer workflows and usability patterns.

  • Cloud Infrastructure and Container Orchestration

    Proficiency with Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure) for deploying, monitoring, and scaling backend systems. Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools and continuous deployment pipelines.

  • Observability and Monitoring

    Expertise implementing comprehensive observability through logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting. Experience with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, and datadog for production system visibility.

Education

  • Computer Science or Related Field

    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline providing strong foundations in algorithms, data structures, systems design, and software architecture principles. Equivalent professional experience can substitute.

Experience

  • 9+ Years Backend Engineering Leadership

    Minimum nine years of professional software engineering experience excluding internships, with substantial focus on backend systems, platform engineering, or product-driven infrastructure roles. Demonstrated progression from individual contributor to senior architect-level responsibilities.

  • API and Platform Capabilities Shipping

    Track record of shipping API or platform capabilities that developers and enterprises actively depend on for production workloads. Evidence of supporting users through launch, iteration, and scaling phases with focus on reliability and developer adoption.

  • Cross-Functional Initiative Leadership

    Proven ability leading large-scale initiatives spanning multiple teams including Product, Security, Infrastructure, and Go-to-Market functions. Experience influencing product direction, aligning stakeholders with divergent priorities, and driving alignment on technical decisions.

  • Enterprise Platform and Security Experience

    Experience building enterprise-grade platform controls, compliance infrastructure, security systems, or systems handling regulated data. Understanding of enterprise buyer needs, operational requirements, and audit/compliance frameworks.

  • Production System Reliability Ownership

    Strong track record taking operational ownership of systems at scale with accountability for reliability metrics, incident response, and continuous improvement of system health. Experience debugging complex production issues in distributed environments.

  • Backend Systems Architecture

    Design and implement scalable distributed systems with expertise in service-oriented architecture, microservices patterns, API gateways, and inter-service communication protocols at enterprise scale.

API Enterprise Controls is part of the API Infrastructure organization and owns the platform capabilities that help developers, startups, and enterprises adopt the OpenAI API securely and confidently. We build the systems underneath our APIs and developer platform across authentication and identity, service accounts and key management, secure networking, compliance, auditability, observability, and operational controls. Our users are developers and teams running critical applications on OpenAI, and we partner closely with Product, go-to-market, security, and infrastructure teams to turn their most important needs into reliable, intuitive platform capabilities.

About the Role

We are looking for an exceptional backend software engineer to help define and ship the enterprise capabilities our API Platform needs to scale.; this is a product-engineering role grounded in deep backend systems. You will work across databases, streaming systems, request routing, authentication, and developer-facing APIs while bringing strong product judgment, developer empathy, and attention to the small details that make a platform easier to understand, trust, and operate. You will lead large cross-functional initiatives, work closely with Product and go-to-market teams, engage directly with sophisticated users, and carry ambiguous needs from discovery through design, launch, and iteration.

In this role, you will:

  • Own backend product capabilities end to end across authentication and identity, service accounts and key controls, secure networking, compliance, observability, and operational workflows.

  • Partner with Product, go-to-market, security, infrastructure teams, and sophisticated customers to identify needs, shape the roadmap, and lead large cross-functional projects from design through launch.

  • Design developer-facing APIs, system behavior, configuration, error handling, safe defaults, auditing, and notifications with exceptional care for the details that define a great developer experience.

  • Build, operate, and debug highly reliable backend systems spanning databases, streaming infrastructure, request routing, and distributed services, with strong operational ownership.

Your background might look something like:

  • 9+ years of professional engineering experience, excluding internships, in relevant backend, platform, or product-driven engineering roles.

  • Exceptional backend engineering depth paired with strong product judgment and a track record of shipping API or platform capabilities that users depend on.

  • Experience leading large cross-functional initiatives, influencing product direction, and aligning engineering, Product, go-to-market, security, and infrastructure partners.

  • Proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Python, Go, Rust, TypeScript, or similar, with strong software design and systems fundamentals.

  • Experience with distributed systems, databases, streaming systems, request routing, authentication and identity, networking, or enterprise platform controls.

  • Strong communication and developer empathy, including experience working closely with product partners and users to turn ambiguous needs into clear technical decisions.

  • Strong opinions about reliability, DevOps, and operational excellence, paired with meticulous attention to the details that make complex systems feel simple and dependable.
