Role

What you'll do.

Plaid is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to design and build scalable financial data infrastructure that powers connections between thousands of financial institutions and innovative applications. The ideal candidate will drive technical excellence, develop high-performance backend services, and contribute to Plaid's mission of unlocking financial freedom through robust and secure technology solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Backend Service Development: Design and maintain high-performance, reliable, and scalable backend services with a focus on architectural excellence and system design
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams to define and implement innovative features that meet product and customer needs
  • Code Quality and Maintenance: Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code while developing comprehensive automated testing strategies to ensure system reliability
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical mentorship, review code changes, and help maintain high technical standards across the engineering team

Technical

  • Database Experience

    Proven experience with MySQL or other relational database systems

    Strong background in designing and implementing microservices-based architectures

  • System Design

    Advanced skills in system design, performance optimization, and scalable architecture

Education

  • Academic Background

    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered

Experience

  • Professional Experience

    Minimum of 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a proven track record of successful project deliveries

  • Leadership Experience

    Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance

Responsibilities:

  • Design & Development: Build and maintain backend services with a focus on performance, reliability and scalability.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with product managers and other stakeholders to define and implement new features that meet product and customer needs.

  • Code Quality: Write clean, maintainable and efficient code.

  • Testing & Debugging: Develop automated tests to ensure the quality and reliability of the codebase. Troubleshoot and resolve issues.

  • Engage in hands-on coding and architectural design, setting and maintaining high technical standards for a high performing team.

  • Grow the team via mentorship and leadership, reviewing technical documents and code changes.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience with extensive experience in software engineering with a proven track record of shipping successful projects.

  • Experience with MySQL or other relational databases.

  • Experience working with microservices.

  • Excellent coding, testing, and system design skills.

  • Prior experience with cross functional collaboration, communication and project management skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to mentor and guide junior engineers.

  • Ability to work with operations, product, design, and data science.
