The role

Summary

Lead and mentor a team of 4-6 engineers as an Engineering Manager for Sentry's Apple or Android SDK team, driving technical direction, product quality, and team growth for SDKs processing over a billion events daily. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with strategic team development, requiring 5+ years of mobile platform engineering experience and 2+ years of management expertise. You'll stay close to code while building scalable observability tools used by thousands of developers worldwide.

What you'll do

Team Leadership and Development: Lead, mentor, coach, and sponsor a team of 4-6 engineers by setting high performance standards, managing performance reviews, creating meaningful career development opportunities, and recruiting and onboarding new team members to strengthen the SDK organization.
Technical Direction and Roadmap Ownership: Own the complete technical direction and product roadmap for your SDK platform, ensuring the development of scalable, reliable, and high-quality mobile SDKs through close collaboration with your senior engineering manager and cross-functional stakeholders.
Hands-On Technical Contribution: Stay actively engaged in technical work through code reviews, architecture discussions, and problem-solving on complex engineering challenges, maintaining credibility and technical judgment with your engineering team.
Execution and Delivery Management: Drive execution velocity by scoping technical work, allocating team resources effectively, setting realistic milestones, removing organizational blockers, and maintaining momentum across SDK development cycles.
Engineering Process Optimization: Continuously improve team workflows and engineering practices by adopting modern development methodologies, integrating AI-assisted development tools, and implementing process automation to increase team velocity and code quality.
Performance Metrics and Monitoring: Track and analyze critical metrics for team health, SDK performance, system reliability, and delivery outcomes, using data-driven insights to identify issues early and maintain high-quality observability tooling.
Cross-Functional Communication: Communicate effectively across all organizational directions, representing team interests to leadership, aligning with product and engineering partners, and handling challenging conversations with transparency and empathy.

Technical

Mobile SDK Development Expertise5+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep expertise in mobile platforms (iOS and/or Android), ideally including SDK development, framework design, or developer tooling with focus on platform-specific optimization and integration patterns.
Cross-Platform Development ExperienceDemonstrated experience with cross-platform mobile frameworks such as React Native or Flutter, with understanding of their integration with native SDKs and platform-specific considerations for mobile observability and monitoring.
Architecture and Systems DesignProven ability to drive architecture decisions for complex systems, with comfort reviewing technical code, evaluating design tradeoffs, and validating team technical decisions to maintain system scalability and reliability.
AI Tools and Modern Development WorkflowsTechnical fluency with AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering workflows, with ability to evaluate and integrate new tools to enhance team productivity and code quality.

Education

Computer Science or Related FieldBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating strong foundational computer science knowledge and problem-solving skills.

Experience

Mobile Platform Engineering5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer with substantial hands-on work on iOS and/or Android platforms, including exposure to mobile SDK development, library creation, or developer tools for mobile ecosystems.
Engineering Management2+ years of proven engineering management experience with demonstrated success in team leadership, performance management, technical mentoring, and driving team execution on complex technical initiatives.
Product Ownership and DeliveryDemonstrated experience owning a significant product area end-to-end including requirements scoping, resource allocation, milestone planning, product shipping, and iterative improvement based on user feedback and metrics.
Cross-Functional CollaborationTrack record of thriving in cross-functional environments, collaborating effectively with product managers, designers, infrastructure teams, and other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.

Required skills

Swift and Objective-C or Java and KotlinProficiency in native iOS development languages (Swift/Objective-C) or Android development languages (Java/Kotlin), with ability to review code and guide technical architecture for platform-specific implementations.
Mobile SDK Architecture DesignDeep understanding of mobile SDK design patterns, API surface design, library initialization, memory management, performance optimization, and platform-specific constraints that impact SDK reliability and user experience.
Team Leadership and Performance ManagementStrong skills in team building, mentoring, performance evaluation, career development planning, and creating psychological safety for engineers to take risks and grow professionally.
Technical CommunicationExcellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to articulate complex technical concepts, architectural tradeoffs, and team progress clearly to engineers, managers, product partners, and executive stakeholders.
Product-Minded Engineering LeadershipAbility to balance technical excellence with product outcomes, understanding developer experience, API elegance, and how technical decisions impact end-user value for developer platforms.

Experience with Both iOS and Android PlatformsFamiliarity with both Apple and Android ecosystems, including platform differences in threading models, memory management, networking stacks, and observability capabilities for more effective cross-platform leadership.
