Role

What you'll do.

Join Xero's Payments Platform Engineering team to build the foundational infrastructure that enables money movement through the platform. This role focuses on developing reliable, secure, and scalable payment systems that help small businesses manage invoicing, bill payments, payroll, and future payment experiences with greater confidence and ease.

Responsibilities

  • Payment Orchestration & Provider Integration: Design and implement payment orchestration systems that abstract payment method complexity and manage integrations with multiple payment providers and networks. Establish clear service boundaries between payment methods, providers, and financial networks while ensuring reliable transaction routing and fallback mechanisms.
  • Distributed Systems Architecture: Build and operate reliable backend services handling transactional data where financial accuracy is critical. Design systems with consideration for distributed consistency, resilience patterns, failure handling, and recovery mechanisms to ensure payment operations maintain data integrity across service boundaries.
  • Financial Data Integrity & Reconciliation: Develop robust reconciliation systems, dispute handling workflows, and internal ledger capabilities that ensure all financial events are accurately represented and traceable. Implement audit trails and controls that maintain compliance with financial accuracy standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Customer Onboarding & Verification: Build foundational capabilities for customer onboarding, know-your-business verification, and entity management. Implement risk and compliance frameworks that enable Xero to operate payments securely across multiple regions while protecting customers and their financial data.
  • Production Operations & Observability: Take ownership of service operations including automated testing, deployment strategies, monitoring, alerting, and observability solutions. Establish logging and tracing systems that enable rapid incident response and continuous improvement of payment system reliability.
  • Technical Leadership & Architecture: Contribute to architectural decisions and technical direction for the payments platform. Challenge assumptions, make pragmatic trade-offs between system reliability and delivery timelines, and help refactor tightly coupled systems into reusable capabilities that scale across multiple products and regions.
  • AI & Automation Integration: Explore opportunities to apply AI tools and automation to reduce manual effort in payment processing, verification, and reconciliation workflows. Maintain appropriate human oversight and controls while improving operational efficiency and reducing error rates in financial transactions.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, operational teams, and other engineering organizations to translate customer needs into technical solutions. Communicate clearly about technical decisions, trade-offs, and their impact on customer outcomes and business requirements.
