Role
What you'll do.
Xero is seeking an Integration Engineer to join a brand-new Integration team within Enterprise Technology, responsible for designing and building automation workflows that solve real business problems. This role combines hands-on engineering work with low/no-code and AI-native platforms (SnapLogic, Tray) to rapidly deliver end-to-end solutions across Xero's internal and customer-facing systems. You'll work in a collaborative, hybrid environment across Australia (East Coast) or New Zealand, taking ownership from requirement elicitation through production deployment and monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Design and Build Enterprise Integrations: Design and develop end-to-end workflows and integrations using low/no-code platforms (SnapLogic, Tray) and AI-native tools that automate business processes and remove operational friction. Translate complex business requirements into robust, scalable automated solutions that integrate with internal and customer-facing systems.
- Stakeholder Collaboration and Requirements Elicitation: Partner with business stakeholders across Xero to understand pain points, gather requirements, and identify automation opportunities. Demonstrate strong communication skills to bridge technical execution with business objectives, ensuring solutions directly address business needs and deliver measurable impact.
- Production Ownership and Monitoring: Own integrated solutions through to production deployment, establishing comprehensive monitoring, documentation, and supportability standards. Implement observability practices, error handling, retry logic, and change control processes to ensure reliability and maintainability of all workflows.
- Engineering Standards and Quality Assurance: Contribute to establishing and maintaining engineering standards including source control practices, observability patterns, incident response procedures, and quality reviews. Participate in on-call rotations and incident response activities to support production system reliability.
- Integration Platform Mastery and Continuous Learning: Ramp up expertise on SnapLogic and Tray platforms, mastering their capabilities for workflow orchestration and system integration. Stay current with AI tool capabilities and evaluate when deterministic design patterns provide superior outcomes compared to AI-driven automation.
- Team Development and Knowledge Sharing: Help shape the Integration team's technology practices, coding standards, and operational playbooks as the function develops. Share learnings across the team, contribute to pair programming and code review sessions, and mentor team members on integration architecture patterns and best practices.

Deep understanding of REST APIs, webhooks, authentication mechanisms (OAuth, API keys), rate limiting, and error handling in API-driven architectures. Experience integrating third-party services and building reliable API consumers.
Data Transformation and Mapping
Ability to design and implement data transformation logic, field mapping, data validation, and format conversion (JSON, XML, CSV). Understanding of data lineage, quality assurance, and metadata management in integration flows.
Troubleshooting and Debugging
Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for identifying integration failures, data inconsistencies, and system connectivity issues. Ability to read logs, use debugging tools, and systematically isolate root causes.
AI Tool Utilization
Practical experience using generative AI tools for code generation, logic troubleshooting, and development acceleration. Judgment about when AI assistance improves productivity versus when explicit, deterministic approaches are required for correctness and compliance.
Technical Documentation
Ability to write clear, comprehensive technical documentation including integration architecture diagrams, API specifications, operational runbooks, and deployment procedures. Strong communication of complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

The role and its impact
We're building a brand-new Integration team to power automation at the heart of Xero. You'll design and build workflows and integrations that solve real business problems, removing genuine friction from how we operate. This is modern engineering work: applying software discipline through low/no-code and AI-native platforms, shipping fast, and seeing measurable impact within weeks, not quarters.
Your focus will span the full spectrum: collaborating with stakeholders to understand their pain, translating manual processes into robust automated designs, shipping end-to-end solutions to production, and owning them through monitoring and support. You'll Go Bold by taking problems from conception through delivery, and Go Further by helping shape a team and technology practice that's still forming.
The team and how they connect
This is a brand-new team within our Enterprise Technology function, who support Xero’s internal and customer-facing systems. We prioritise open, transparent conversations where everyone gets heard. We rotate leadership and responsibility to keep learning distributed and ownership shared. And because the team is new, there's real room to influence how we work and potentially the tools we use.
Initially, you will focus on
Ramping up our existing platforms (SnapLogic, Tray) and our engineering standards including source control, observability, error handling, retries and change control
Shipping your first automations end-to-end, from requirement through to a monitored, documented workflow running in production
Building working relationships with business stakeholders and learning to elicit requirements and translate them into robust automated designs
Contributing to quality reviews and participating in our incident response and on-call practices
Where and how you can work
This role can be based in Australia (East Coast) or New Zealand, we work a hybrid model with the flexibility to work from home combined with in-office collaboration.
Here are some of the things we are looking for
Hands-on experience building workflows, integrations, or automations (whether that's through software engineering, integration platforms or middleware tools)
Comfort using AI tools to solve logic problems and automate tasks, paired with a clear-eyed sense of when a deterministic design is the right choice instead.
Your skill at eliciting requirements and bridging technical execution with business needs means you translate what people need into what they should build.
You own work through to a monitored, documented, supportable state. Shipping quality solutions rather than cutting corners to go faster.
A growth mindset and comfort with ambiguity: you'll help shape the team's standards and patterns as they form, and you're motivated to take on increasingly complex work over time.
Apply even if your experience isn't a perfect match! At Xero, we hire based on your skills, passion, and the unique perspective you can bring to enhance our culture and team.
