What you'll do.
Developer, Web Extension is a Mid-level software engineering position at 1Password, where you'll develop and maintain browser extensions that power the core password filling and saving experience for millions of users across Chromium, Firefox, and Safari. You'll collaborate with Product, Design, QA, and the open-source community to advance unified sign-in capabilities while applying software development best practices, TypeScript, and React expertise in a remote, security-focused environment.
Responsibilities
- Build & Maintain Production Software: Code, test, debug, and deliver production-quality software systems for web extension features, ensuring reliability across multiple browser platforms including Chromium, Firefox, and Safari extensions
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with Product, Design, QA, and stakeholder teams throughout the development lifecycle to ensure smooth feature releases and communicate technical requirements in clear, actionable terms
- Technical Planning & Estimation: Collaborate with project managers and teammates to identify major development tasks, break down epics into stories, estimate complexity, and create realistic implementation plans
- Comprehensive Testing: Write extensive unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests throughout the development cycle, ensuring code functions as expected and maintains high quality standards
- Code Review & Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough code reviews for team members to maintain high code quality, share technical knowledge, provide constructive feedback, and foster a culture of continuous improvement
- Technical Mentorship: Guide junior and new team members by explaining team expectations, providing technical direction, sharing architectural knowledge, and engaging in pair programming sessions to accelerate learning
- Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Generate and review technical documentation on code processes, architectural decisions, and system design to ensure project scalability and institutional knowledge preservation
- Industry Learning & Innovation: Stay informed about latest frontend development trends, browser API advancements, security best practices, and emerging web extension technologies to bring innovative solutions to the team
- On-call Support: Participate in on-call rotational work to provide uninterrupted production support, respond to customer-impacting issues, and resolve emergencies with quick turnaround times
- Open-source Community Engagement: Collaborate with external open-source community members to advance 1Password's filling and saving experience, gather feedback, and drive innovation in the password management ecosystem
Qualifications
What we look for.
Technical
TypeScript Proficiency
2+ years of hands-on experience writing production TypeScript code with strong type system understanding and best practices
React Development
Proven experience building complex, interactive user interfaces with React including component architecture and state management
Web APIs Knowledge
Working knowledge of modern Web APIs including DOM features, event handling, and browser APIs for extension development
Software Development Best Practices
Deep understanding of coding standards, version control workflows, and development methodologies including testing-driven development
Problem Solving & Debugging
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems, propose effective solutions, and use debugging techniques to identify and fix issues
Cross-functional Communication
Ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively across Product, Design, and QA teams
Education
Computer Science Background or Equivalent
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating software engineering expertise

The Filling & Saving team builds and maintains the core experience for filling and saving your most important data online to make 1Password the easiest and simplest password manager in the world. You will work with Product, Design, and QA teams internally as well as the open-source community to advance our filling and saving experience in an ever-changing environment.
How we’re using AI today
Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.

What we're looking for:
You have 2+ years of experience in software development, with proficiency in TypeScript and React
A drive for and proven experience in software development best practices, and coding standards
You enjoy solving complex problems with a demonstrated ability to tackle problems and propose effective solutions
You like communicating and collaborating and can demonstrate experience in working effectively with team and communicating technical concepts to non-technical cross-functional partners
You’re passionate about testing methodologies and debugging techniques to ensure high-quality code
Bonus points for:
Experience building and maintaining browser extensions for Chromium, Firefox, and/or Safari.
Experience with Rust, Go, or related languages.

USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $123,000 USD and $172,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $111,000 CAD and $155,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
