Role
What you'll do.
Senior Developer for CI Architecture at 1Password, focused on designing and evolving CI/CD pipelines and developer tooling to enable fast, reliable, low-friction workflows. This role bridges build systems, test architecture, workflow design, and developer experience—partnering with CI Platform and product teams to optimize performance, reliability, and usability across multi-platform environments. Requires deep CI/CD expertise with GitHub Actions, strong systems thinking, and proven ability to drive measurable performance improvements in complex build and test architectures.
Responsibilities
- Design and Evolve Reference CI Architectures: Define and maintain reference CI architecture patterns for GitHub Actions across Product Engineering teams, including best practices for job decomposition, intelligent parallelization strategies, optimal caching and artifact management, multi-platform build orchestration, and intelligent test execution partitioning to enable teams to build on proven foundations.
- Partner on Pipeline Redesign and Performance Optimization: Work closely with engineering teams to diagnose and redesign slow or fragile pipelines through time-boxed engagements, establishing baseline metrics and driving measurable outcomes such as P90 pipeline time reduction, decreased rerun rates, improved build stability, and shortened feedback loops for developers.
- Enhance CI Developer Experience: Improve the day-to-day developer experience by making CI failures easier to diagnose with clearer error signals, building abstractions and templates that make best practices the default path, reducing cognitive overhead, and eliminating opaque or cryptic process failures that slow down developer iteration.
- Drive Application-Layer Performance Improvements: Optimize build and compilation strategies, enhance dependency management efficiency, improve toolchain performance across languages (Rust, Node.js, mobile platforms), architect test improvements to reduce flakiness, and partner with service owners to implement changes that compound across the organization's codebase.
- Establish Observability-Driven Improvement Loops: Build and maintain observability infrastructure translating CI metrics into actionable architectural changes, analyze stage-level performance regressions and queue vs execution time patterns, monitor flaky test rates, and help teams interpret signals to prioritize highest-leverage fixes.
- Co-Develop Golden Workflows and Guardrails: Partner with the CI Platform team to establish golden workflows, guardrails, and reference implementations, focusing CI Architecture on usability patterns and best practices while CI Platform handles enforcement capability, secure defaults, and platform primitives.
- Build Developer-Centric Internal Tooling: Design and implement CLI tools, workflow generators, reusable GitHub Actions, and other internal utilities that reduce friction, codify best practices, and enable teams to adopt optimized CI patterns with minimal effort.
- Provide Technical Leadership and Mentoring: Lead by example with outcome-driven pragmatism, developer empathy, and collaborative problem-solving; mentor other engineers on CI architecture principles and guide teams toward sustainable, measurable performance improvements rather than local optimizations.

Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.
We are seeking a Senior Developer for our CI Architecture team. The team’s mission is to enable fast, reliable, low-friction CI/CD workflows for developers (and increasingly, for agents) by owning CI pipeline architecture patterns, CI developer experience, and application-layer performance improvements.
This is not a “runner infra” role. You’ll work at the intersection of build systems, test architecture, workflow design, and developer tooling—partnering closely with CI Platform (runners/orchestration/caching/observability) and with product engineering teams (codebases, build targets, test suites).
How we’re using AI today
Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
Experience designing or evolving CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions preferred)
Hands-on ability to improve build and test performance (e.g., compilation caching strategies, dependency optimization, parallelization, test sharding/partitioning).
Deep familiarity with multi-platform build/test (macOS, Windows, Linux) and constraints of each environment.
Strong software engineering fundamentals with demonstrated systems thinking.
Practical debugging skills: you can isolate bottlenecks, reason from logs/metrics, and drive fixes across multiple layers.
Comfort collaborating across teams and codebases; ability to influence without direct ownership.
Bonus points for:
Knowledge of building systems/toolchains relevant to our ecosystem (e.g., Rust, Node/pnpm, mobile toolchains).
Experience with monorepos, large-scale CI, or developer productivity initiatives.
Experience building internal tooling (CLI tools, workflow generators, reusable actions/workflows).
Experience working with observability data (e.g., Datadog CI metrics) to drive ongoing performance improvements.
What you can expect:
Define and evolve reference CI architectures for GitHub Actions across Product Engineering (job decomposition/parallelization, caching & artifact strategy, test partitioning/execution, multi-platform builds).
Partner with teams to redesign slow or fragile pipelines; lead time-boxed engagements with measurable outcomes (e.g., reduce P90 pipeline time by X%, cut rerun rate by Y%).
Improve CI developer experience:
Make failures easier to diagnose and fix (clearer signals, better ergonomics, fewer "Opaque processes").
Build tooling/abstractions/templates so best practices are the default path.
Drive application-layer performance optimization:
Build/compilation strategies, dependency management, and toolchain performance.
Test architecture improvements and flake reduction in partnership with service/app owners.
Establish observability → action loops:
Translate CI metrics into actionable architectural changes (queue vs execution time, stage-level regressions, flaky rate).
Help teams interpret signals and prioritize the highest-leverage fixes.
Co-develop “golden workflows & guardrails” with CI Platform:
EUX CI Architecture focuses on usability and patterns.
CI Platform focuses on enforcement capability, secure defaults, and platform primitives.
Working style
Outcome-driven and pragmatic: you’ll prioritize changes that deliver sustained wins, not just local optimizations.
Developer-empathetic: you care about feedback loops, failure clarity, and making the “right thing” easy.
Collaborative: you partner tightly with CI Platform and product teams, with clear ownership boundaries.
USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $153,000 USD and $214,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $144,000 CAD and $202,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
At 1Password, we approach each individual's compensation with a promise of fair market value and internal equity commensurate with experience and specific skill set.
This posting is for an existing vacancy.
Our culture
At 1Password, we prioritize collaboration, clear and transparent communication, receptiveness to feedback, and alignment with our core values: keep it simple, lead with honesty, and put people first.
You’ll be part of a team that challenges the status quo, and is excited to experiment and iterate in search of the best solution. That said, 1Password is not for everyone. Our work is demanding, we strive for excellence, and the pace is fast. We need people who are keen to take on challenging problems, who seek feedback to grow, and who are driven to make an impact. If you're looking for a place where you can settle into a comfortable routine, this might not be the right fit for you. We’re looking for individuals who are proven experts in their fields, as well as those who are highly adaptable, can thrive in ambiguity and through change, are curious, and above all deliver results.
How we work with AI
