What you'll do.
Airwallex seeks a Senior Cloud Network Engineer to architect, maintain, and scale global cloud network infrastructure supporting 250,000+ businesses across 27 offices worldwide. This role combines hands-on network design and operations with technical leadership, requiring deep expertise in AWS networking, multi-vendor environments (Juniper, Palo Alto, Cisco), and fintech-grade reliability. You'll mentor junior engineers, design team structure for infrastructure maturity, and manage critical network incidents across international data centers while ensuring strict regulatory compliance for a US$11 billion financial platform.
Responsibilities
- Global Infrastructure Architecture and Expansion: Design, maintain, and expand Airwallex's distributed cloud network infrastructure into new regions and markets. Lead the architectural decisions for highly available and secure production network infrastructure spanning LAN, WAN, VPN, and cloud environments across multiple global data centers and cloud regions. Ensure all network designs adhere to strict regulatory and compliance requirements necessary for financial services operations.
- Network Operations and Device Management: Own configuration, troubleshooting, and optimization of complex network devices including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and cloud environments. Manage global connectivity across international leased lines and domestic internet connections. Demonstrate mastery of command-line configuration and troubleshooting for vendors such as JunOS, IOS, and equivalent systems across mixed-vendor networking environments.
- Incident Management and On-Call Leadership: Serve as first responder and escalation point for complex, high-impact network issues. Lead incident response through to completion, produce comprehensive after-action reports, and implement preventative measures. Participate in a global on-call rotation providing primary response for production and infrastructure issues affecting payment processing and financial operations.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration and Integration: Collaborate with InfoSec, DevOps, Database, Corporate IT, and Facilities teams to design integrated network solutions supporting business initiatives across multiple regions. Work with technical and non-technical stakeholders to troubleshoot issues across physical and cloud environments. Translate complex network concepts for non-technical audiences and align network strategy with broader business objectives.
- Team Leadership and Knowledge Development: Mentor and train junior engineers in network operations, design patterns, and troubleshooting methodologies. Design the team structure and size for infrastructure maturity and scalability. Develop and maintain comprehensive network documentation including diagrams, configurations, operational procedures, and runbooks to enable team productivity and knowledge sharing.
- Technology Evaluation and Optimization: Evaluate and recommend emerging networking technologies and solutions to support global business growth and competitive positioning. Investigate practical solutions to improve the networking team's observability and operational capabilities. Optimize network performance and cost-efficiency across AWS, GCP, and other cloud environments while maintaining security posture.
- Change Management and Maintenance Windows: Support pre-scheduled network upgrades and flexible scheduling requirements to minimize business disruption. Maintain strong documentation habits and demonstrate comprehensive understanding of change-control processes. Execute planned network modifications across global infrastructure with careful coordination and rollback procedures.

Technical
CCNP or JNCIP-Level Networking Certification
Possess CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) or JNCIP (Juniper Networks Certified Internet Professional) certification or equivalent demonstrating deep networking foundation and proven expertise in enterprise network architecture.
Multi-Vendor Network Environment Expertise
Demonstrated experience operating and troubleshooting in mixed-vendor networking environments including Juniper, Palo Alto, Cisco, Aruba, or equivalent solutions in global enterprise deployments. Proficiency with JunOS, IOS, and similar command-line interfaces required.
AWS Networking Production Experience
Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience designing and operating AWS networking in production environments. Deep knowledge of VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups, NACLs, VPN connections, Direct Connect, and AWS networking best practices at scale.
BGP and Route Filtering Mastery
Solid understanding and practical implementation experience with BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) configuration, route filtering, policy-based routing, and dynamic routing protocols in complex network topologies.
GCP Networking Fundamentals
Basic to intermediate understanding of Google Cloud Platform networking concepts including VPCs, subnets, firewall rules, Cloud Interconnect, and GCP networking architecture.
Cloud and Fintech Infrastructure Knowledge
Experience working with high-availability networks in fintech, finance, or adjacent regulated industries. Understanding of compliance requirements, security policies, and operational constraints specific to financial services infrastructure.
Infrastructure as Code and Automation
Comfort with declarative infrastructure tools such as Terraform, Git-based CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation. Experience with scripting languages such as Python or Bash for network automation and troubleshooting.
Education
Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field. (Strongly preferred, but equivalent hands-on experience and certifications may substitute)
Professional Networking Certifications
CCNP, JNCIP, or equivalent professional-level networking certification required. Additional certifications such as AWS Certified Advanced Networking or GCP Cloud Architect are advantageous.
Experience
Senior-Level Network Engineering
5+ years of relevant experience in network engineering roles with demonstrated progression to senior-level responsibilities. Proven track record of designing and maintaining global network infrastructure supporting large-scale operations.
Global Data Center and Cloud Operations
Experience managing network infrastructure across multiple global data centers, cloud regions, and international connectivity. Familiarity with data center providers, access requirements, conduct requirements, and elastic connectivity providers.
Leadership and Mentoring
Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers, architect team structures, and lead technical initiatives. Experience working in outcomes-oriented environments with builder mentality and ability to drive projects from conception to completion.
Incident Response and Troubleshooting
Proven ability to lead complex incident response, troubleshoot across multi-vendor environments, and produce comprehensive documentation. Experience with change control processes and managing network operations in business-critical environments.

What you’ll do
