Role

What you'll do.

Senior Network Engineer responsible for designing and maintaining Airwallex's global network infrastructure across multiple cloud regions and data centers. This role involves architecting highly available production networks, managing multi-vendor networking hardware (Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto), and leading incident response for a fintech platform serving 250,000+ businesses. You'll collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams while establishing new network foundations and scaling infrastructure to support global financial operations.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Deploy Global Network Infrastructure: Build and maintain highly available production network infrastructure including LAN, WAN, VPN, and cloud connectivity across multiple global data centers and cloud regions. Design the corporate network foundations while aligning network architecture to regional demands and business growth trajectories.
  • Manage Multi-Vendor Networking Hardware: Configure, deploy, and troubleshoot complex networking devices across mixed vendors (Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, Aruba) globally, including on-premises gateways, routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers. Maintain command-line proficiency with vendor-specific operating systems (JunOS, IOS) and manage international leased lines and domestic internet connections.
  • Lead Incident Response and Escalation: Act as first-responder and escalation point for critical network issues in production environments. Run incidents to completion, conduct after-action reviews, and participate in global on-call rotation to ensure infrastructure availability for financial operations serving 250,000+ businesses.
  • Collaborate on Infrastructure Integration: Work cross-functionally with CorpSec, ProdSec, Engineering, Product, IT Engineering, and Workplace teams to integrate network solutions, support business initiatives, and build core networking understanding across IT operations and support teams.
  • Infrastructure as Code and Automation: Implement declarative infrastructure tools such as Terraform and Git CI/CD pipelines for network configuration management. Develop event-driven automation using scripting languages (Python, Bash) to enhance operational efficiency and reduce manual configuration overhead.
  • Network Documentation and Change Management: Develop and maintain comprehensive network documentation including architectural diagrams, device configurations, operational procedures, and runbooks. Implement strong change control processes and ensure compliance with security and operational standards.
  • Evaluate and Recommend Network Technologies: Research, evaluate, and recommend emerging networking technologies and solutions to stay ahead of business growth demands. Assess cloud infrastructure options (AWS, GCP, Azure, Aliyun) and connectivity solutions to optimize cost, performance, and reliability.
  • Participate in Infrastructure Planning: Help design team structure and size for future infrastructure scaling. Participate in pre-scheduled network upgrades and strategic initiatives with flexible scheduling as needed to minimize business disruption and ensure continuity of global financial services.

Technical

  • CCNP/JNCIP Level Networking Expertise

    Demonstrate strong foundational networking knowledge equivalent to Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Juniper Networks Certified Internet Professional (JNCIP) level, showing advanced understanding of routing protocols, network architecture, and troubleshooting methodologies.

  • Multi-Vendor Networking Environment

    Proven experience in multi-vendor networking environments with hands-on configuration expertise across Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, Aruba, and other enterprise networking platforms. Demonstrated ability to manage heterogeneous networks at global scale within multinational organizations.

  • Scripting and Automation

    Solid proficiency in scripting languages including Python and Bash for network automation, configuration management, and operational tasks. Experience with event-driven automation frameworks preferred for intelligent infrastructure orchestration.

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC)

    Comfortable with declarative infrastructure tools such as Terraform for network configuration versioning and management. Proficiency with Git-based CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment, testing, and infrastructure provisioning.

  • Cloud Platforms (AWS/GCP)

    Solid hands-on experience with major cloud platforms, specifically AWS and/or GCP cloud networking services. Understanding of cloud VPC architecture, security groups, routing, and integration with on-premises networks through hybrid connectivity solutions.

  • BGP Routing and Route Filtering

    Strong understanding of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) fundamentals, route filtering principles, path selection, and multi-path routing scenarios. Ability to design and troubleshoot complex routing policies in enterprise and cloud environments.

  • Network Hardware Configuration

    Command-line proficiency with network device configuration including JunOS, IOS, and proprietary command syntax across enterprise routing and switching platforms. Expertise in VLAN configuration, STP, OSPF, and other fundamental networking protocols.

  • VPN and Security Protocols

    Experience with IPSEC VPN setup, configuration, and troubleshooting for secure site-to-site and remote access connectivity. Understanding of security best practices, encryption protocols, and firewall rule implementation in production environments.

  • Linux Command-Line Administration

    Strong knowledge of Linux distributions and command-line interface for network troubleshooting, log analysis, and operational tasks. Ability to work effectively in terminal-based environments for network diagnostics and system administration.

  • AI-Assisted Workflows

    Understanding of artificial intelligence applications in networking operations, including predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and AI-powered troubleshooting tools. Ability to leverage AI to work smarter and solve infrastructure problems faster.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)

    Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field strongly preferred. Equivalent demonstrated experience in networking roles and relevant certifications may substitute for formal degree requirements.

  • Professional Certifications

    CCNP, JNCIP, or equivalent advanced networking certifications demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of enterprise routing, switching, security, and network design principles.

Experience

  • Global Network Operations

    5+ years of hands-on experience managing enterprise network infrastructure at global scale, with exposure to multiple geographic regions, data centers, and cloud environments. Experience operating networks that support high-volume business transactions and require continuous availability.

  • Production Infrastructure Management

    Demonstrated experience designing, deploying, and maintaining highly available production network infrastructure supporting mission-critical business operations. Track record of managing infrastructure incidents and ensuring business continuity in fast-paced environments.

  • Financial Services or High-Availability Networks

    Preferred experience in fintech, finance, payments, or adjacent industries where network reliability directly impacts business operations. Understanding of high-availability requirements, disaster recovery, and compliance considerations in regulated environments.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

    Proven ability to work effectively with engineering teams, security teams, and business stakeholders. Demonstrated capability to translate technical networking concepts to non-technical audiences and drive alignment on infrastructure priorities.

  • Incident Response Leadership

    Track record of leading incident response efforts from initial triage through resolution and post-incident analysis. Experience with on-call rotations and ability to maintain operational excellence under pressure while maintaining detailed documentation.

  • Enterprise Routing and Switching

    Expert-level proficiency with router and switch configuration, including protocols like OSPF, BGP, spanning-tree, VLAN tagging, and port aggregation. Hands-on experience with vendor-specific implementations across Cisco IOS, Juniper JunOS, and Palo Alto operating systems.

  • Cloud Network Architecture

    Solid understanding of cloud native networking including VPC design, subnet allocation, routing tables, security groups, and hybrid cloud connectivity. Experience integrating on-premises networks with AWS or GCP using VPN, Direct Connect, or equivalent services.

  • Python Programming for Networking

  • Firewall and Security Architecture

What you’ll do

  • Build the foundations of our new corporate network, and help design the team structure and size for the future

  • Maintain, design and deploy Airwallex's global cloud footprint, aligning network requirements to regional demands.

  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available and secure production network infrastructure (LAN, WAN, VPN, Cloud) across multiple global data centres and cloud regions.

  • Configure on-prem gateway/router/networking hardware globally, including mixed vendors in some locations

  • Manage global connectivity over international leased lines and domestic internet connections

  • Own the configuration and troubleshooting of complex network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and cloud environments.

  • Act as a first-responder or escalation point for complex network issues, running an incident through to completion and after-action reports.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., CorpSec, ProdSec, Engineering, Product, IT Engineering, Workplace, etc.) to integrate network solutions and support business initiatives.

  • Work with IT Engineering, IT Support on troubleshooting network issues on endpoints, including basic IT operations support, building a core networking understanding among the team

Who you are

 

Minimum qualifications: Must haves

  • CCNP / JNCIP level experience showing a strong networking foundation

  • Demonstrated experience in a multi/mixed networking vendor environment (Juniper, Palo Alto, Cisco, Aruba, etc.) in a global company

  • Experience and understanding of scripting languages eg: python, bash

    • Event driven automation experience a plus

  • Comfortable with declarative infrastructure tools, eg: terraform, git ci/cd pipelines

  • Strong documentation habits and understanding of change control processes

  • AWS and/or GCP experience, solid experience with both is a plus.

  • Understanding of AI assisted workflows and use cases
