What you'll do.

Software Engineer Intern at Airwallex, a global fintech platform valued at $11B, designing and deploying production-ready payment capabilities for the Spend Cards and Issuing platform. This 6-month internship (Jan-Jun 2027) offers hands-on experience in full-stack development, distributed systems design, AI-driven automation, and production engineering within a mission-critical financial services environment serving 250,000+ businesses worldwide. Responsibilities

  • Technical Design and Architecture: Create detailed workflow diagrams, dependency mapping, and technical design documentation for Cards or Issuing platform features. Define success criteria including latency targets, accuracy metrics, and cost optimization strategies. Collaborate with senior engineers to scope feasibility and validate architectural approaches before implementation begins.
  • Full-Stack Feature Development: Design, develop, and integrate production-ready capabilities across backend microservices, RESTful APIs, and customer-facing frontend interfaces. Implement complex business logic for card lifecycle management, spend controls, transaction visibility, and issuing workflows. Write clean, high-quality production-grade code adhering to engineering best practices and SOLID principles.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Implement comprehensive automated testing strategies including unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests. Establish test coverage standards and ensure robust interactions between distributed services. Participate in code reviews and contribute testing improvements throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Production Observability and Monitoring: Design and implement observability dashboards with structured logging, custom metrics, and intelligent alerting systems. Configure monitoring to track system performance, reliability, and user experience. Set up tracing mechanisms to diagnose issues in production environments and enable data-driven performance optimization.
  • Production Deployment and Validation: Deploy completed capabilities to production environments following deployment best practices and safety protocols. Validate features with real users and gather feedback. Coordinate with Operations and Finance teams to ensure compliance and smooth rollout of payment platform changes.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Participate actively in team standups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives. Partner with Operations, Finance, Infosec, and product teams to understand requirements and validate outputs. Communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders across the organization.
  • Continuous Learning and Documentation: Contribute to team documentation, architectural decision records, and runbooks. Participate in knowledge-sharing sessions and pair programming with mentors. Deliver bi-weekly project updates and showcase progress at mid-point and final presentations to the broader Engineering organization.
  • AI-Driven Systems Development: Design and implement AI-driven systems that automate financial workflows and enhance customer experiences. Apply machine learning concepts to solve complex payment platform challenges while adhering to production AI governance, security, and best practices standards.

What we look for.

Technical

  • Python Proficiency

    Strong expertise in Python with demonstrated software engineering fundamentals. Ability to write clean, maintainable code with proper design patterns, error handling, and adherence to PEP 8 standards. Experience building scalable backend systems and microservices.

  • System Design and Architecture

    Solid understanding of distributed systems design principles, API design patterns (REST, gRPC), and database architecture. Ability to build elegant abstractions over complex patterns, particularly in financial services contexts. Experience with designing scalable, reliable systems handling high transaction volumes.

  • AI Systems and Production ML

    Hands-on experience building and deploying production AI systems with understanding of model governance, monitoring, and reliability. Knowledge of AI/ML best practices including data validation, feature engineering, model serving, and governance frameworks. Experience integrating AI capabilities into production applications.

  • Production Engineering Fundamentals

    Strong grasp of testing methodologies (unit, integration, end-to-end), code quality standards, and observability principles. Experience with structured logging, metrics collection, and monitoring systems. Understanding of deployment pipelines, CI/CD automation, and incident response procedures.

  • Software Engineering Fundamentals

    Solid foundation in computer science concepts including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented and functional programming paradigms. Experience with version control systems (Git), debugging tools, and development workflows. Understanding of SOLID principles and design patterns.

  • Communication and Collaboration

    Excellent ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience working effectively in cross-functional teams, participating in code reviews, and contributing to collaborative decision-making processes.

Education

  • Tertiary Qualification

    Pursuing or completed a formal tertiary qualification from a recognized university. Degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, mathematics, physics, or related discipline is strongly preferred.

  • Core CS Fundamentals

    Strong foundation in fundamental computer science concepts including algorithms, data structures, operating systems, databases, and networking. Coursework or practical experience demonstrating mastery of these areas.

Experience

  • Academic Background

    Currently enrolled as a student in Singapore at a recognized university, pursuing a formal tertiary qualification. Demonstrate strong academic foundation in computer science, software engineering, or related disciplines relevant to building financial systems.

  • Production Code Delivery

    Proven track record of delivering production-grade code in academic projects, internships, or open-source contributions. Experience taking features from conception through testing, deployment, and monitoring in real environments with actual users.

  • Financial Services Domain Knowledge (Preferred)

    Prior exposure to financial services, payments infrastructure, or fintech products. Understanding of concepts like card lifecycle management, spend controls, transaction processing, or distributed ledger systems. Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements in financial services.

  • Python

    Production-level Python development with strong software engineering fundamentals including clean code practices, design patterns, and testing methodologies. Ability to build scalable backend systems and integrate with distributed infrastructure.

  • System Design Thinking

    Critical thinking ability to design complex systems, identify dependencies, evaluate trade-offs, and propose elegant solutions. Experience building abstractions that simplify operational complexity while maintaining reliability and performance.

  • Production AI Systems

  • Testing and Code Quality

  • MLOps and Deployment Pipelines

  • Event-Driven Architectures

What You'll Do:

Project scope/overview:

The intern will design, develop, and deploy production-ready capabilities for Airwallex’s Spend Cards and Issuing platform. The project may span card lifecycle management, spend controls, transaction visibility, APIs, or customer-facing card experiences..


Detailed Outline:

Technical tasks/deliverables:

  1. Technical design scoping: Create workflow diagrams, identify dependencies, expected inputs and outputs, and define success criteria (e.g., latency, accuracy, cost).

  2. Feature development: Build and integrate production-ready Cards and Issuing capabilities across backend, APIs, and frontend where needed.

  3. Testing & observability: Add automated testing and set up observability dashboards with logging, metrics, and alerts to monitor performance and reliability.

  4. Deployment: Deploy the completed capability to production and validate it with real users.


Project Milestones:

  1. Technical design sign-off: Finalise workflow diagrams, success criteria, and technical design documentation.

  2. MVP development: Build Cards or Issuing capability and validate key flows.

  3. Production readiness: Complete testing, observability, and integration requirements.

  4. Deployment and showcase: Release the capability and present the outcome to the wider Engineering team.

Planned role & responsibilities

  • Actively participate in team standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives to align with engineering priorities.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners (e.g., Operations, Finance, Infosec) to understand workflow requirements and validate outputs.

  • Contribute to code reviews, testing, and documentation.

  • Deliver bi-weekly project updates and participate in mid-point and final showcases to demo project.

  • Design, develop, and deploy an assigned Cards or Issuing project under mentor guidance.

Outline of onboarding process steps in team:

  • Buddy assignment: Pair with a senior engineer/mentor for end-to-end feature lifecycle walkthrough, and weekly technical check-ins.

  • Tools orientation: Setup access to relevant AI and development tools

  • Domain familiarization: Walkthrough of identified finance operational workflows (e.g., cash reconciliation, PO approvals) with relevant domain experts

Proposed schedule of Review Check-ins:

  • Monthly check-in for progress review and feedback sharing

  • Final Review: at 24 weeks (End-of-project showcase)

Eligibility requirements

  • Able to commit to a 6 month placement period, ideally commence in Jan ‘27 through to June 2027.

  • Able to commit to Full Time hours for the duration of the placement.

  • Are a current student in Singapore, studying towards a formal tertiary qualification at a recognised university.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Desire to learn and grow with Airwallex as a technologist.

Minimum skills & experience:

  • Proficiency in Python, with strong software engineering fundamentals.

  • Ability to design and implement AI-driven systems that automate workflows and improve customer experiences.

  • Strong skills in system design and critical thinking, building elegant abstractions over complex patterns, especially in financial services.

  • Proven track record of writing clean, high-quality, production-grade code and ensuring robust interactions between services.

  • Experience working with production AI systems, adhering to best practices in engineering, security, and AI governance.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner across technical and non-technical teams.

Preferred skills & experience:

  • Proficiency in Kotlin, Typescript or Javascript.

  • Familiarity with MLOps practices and deployment pipelines for AI-driven products (e.g., model serving, monitoring, retraining).
