The role

Summary

Confluent is seeking a Staff Software Developer to join their Stream Processing & Analytics (SPA) team, focusing on building an advanced, cloud-native stream processing engine based on Apache Flink. The ideal candidate will drive technical strategy, architect complex engineering systems, and contribute to the development of a scalable, efficient data streaming platform for Confluent Cloud.

What you'll do

Technical Architecture: Own the architecture and technical strategy for complex engineering systems within the Flink engine, including scheduling, deployment, autoscaling, and state management components

Project Execution: Independently drive execution of complex, open-ended technical projects from inception through production, identifying and initiating high-impact initiatives

Technical Excellence: Serve as a technical expert, improving system stability, performance, scalability, and operational excellence across critical systems

Team Development: Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, helping the team grow sustainably through effective processes and tools

Strategic Alignment: Contribute to the broader technical vision and translate strategic goals into actionable, high-impact projects

Programming LanguagesProficiency in Go, Java, Scala, or Rust with ability to contribute technically to development

Cloud EngineeringStrong understanding of cloud-native principles and building mission-critical systems in public cloud environments

Distributed SystemsExtensive experience in designing and developing large-scale distributed systems, particularly stream processing engines

Education

Academic QualificationBS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related field

Experience

Professional ExperienceMinimum 8+ years of relevant experience in stream processing or large-scale distributed systems
