Summary

Engineering Manager leading a full-stack Agent Experience team of 7-8 engineers at Deliveroo, responsible for building and scaling a high-performance back-office workspace serving 30,000+ support agents globally across Deliveroo, DoorDash, and Wolt. This role requires 6+ years of commercial engineering experience with 2+ years in engineering leadership, strong backend expertise (Go, Python, Node.js), and proven ability to ship complex, real-time systems at scale in a dynamic, fast-moving marketplace environment.

What you'll do

Team Leadership and Development: Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 7-8 full-stack, frontend, and backend engineers. Develop individual career trajectories, conduct regular one-on-ones, provide constructive feedback, and create a culture of technical excellence and psychological safety. Build high-performing teams through thoughtful hiring, onboarding, and continuous skill development.
Project Scoping and Delivery: Scope complex projects spanning the Agent Experience platform, break down requirements into actionable, shippable work, and manage dependencies across frontend, backend, and infrastructure. Balance feature delivery with technical debt management while maintaining realistic timelines and clear communication of trade-offs to stakeholders.
Agile Ceremonies and Rituals: Run sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives. Facilitate efficient team ceremonies that maintain momentum, unblock impediments, and ensure continuous improvement. Adapt agile practices to the team's unique context while maintaining discipline around delivery commitments.
Progress Tracking and Stakeholder Alignment: Track team progress against OKRs, remove blockers, and manage scope and timeline trade-offs. Represent the team in cross-functional planning sessions with product, design, and other engineering teams. Ensure transparent communication of status, risks, and dependency management to leadership and partners.
Operational Excellence and On-Call Management: Maintain high standards for operational excellence by managing technical debt, establishing healthy on-call practices, and implementing SRE principles. Monitor system reliability, define SLOs, and ensure the team has the tools and context needed to maintain production systems at scale serving millions of support agents.
Architecture and Technical Strategy: Stay technically engaged through architecture reviews, design discussions, and code contributions. Guide the team's technical direction, evaluate technology choices for the unified back-office platform, and ensure scalability and maintainability of systems handling tens of millions of conversations monthly.
Hiring and Recruiting: Drive hiring initiatives to expand the team with high-caliber engineers. Conduct technical interviews, participate in recruitment strategy, and build a diverse pipeline of talent. Set clear expectations around team culture, values, and technical standards during the hiring process.
Cross-Org Collaboration and Unification: Collaborate across Deliveroo, DoorDash, and Wolt to migrate support teams onto the unified platform. Work with stakeholders across three brands to align priorities, manage integration challenges, and ensure a seamless transition from fragmented legacy tools to a modern, consolidated system.

Backend Development ExpertisePrimary proficiency in backend technologies such as Go, Python, or Node.js with proven ability to design and ship scalable, maintainable systems. Deep understanding of backend architecture patterns, API design, databases, and distributed systems principles.

Education

Computer Science or Engineering DegreeBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline. Equivalent practical experience and demonstrated mastery of software engineering fundamentals may substitute for formal education.

Experience

Commercial Software Engineering6+ years of professional software engineering experience building production systems, shipping features to millions of users, and iterating rapidly based on customer feedback. Experience scaling systems and teams as products grow.
Engineering Leadership2+ years of technical leadership experience as a Tech Lead, Senior Engineer with team responsibilities, or Engineering Manager. Proven track record of growing engineers, maintaining team health, and delivering consistently under ambiguity.
Cross-Functional Project ManagementTrack record of running complex projects spanning multiple engineering teams, coordinating dependencies, and navigating competing priorities. Experience influencing without direct authority and aligning stakeholders across product, design, and infrastructure disciplines.
Hiring and Team BuildingDirect experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring engineers. Ability to assess technical talent, evaluate cultural fit, and build diverse teams. Experience establishing team culture, values, and technical standards that attract and retain high-performing engineers.
Marketplace or Multi-Sided Platform ExperienceExperience with complex marketplace systems, multi-stakeholder platforms, or three-sided networks. Understanding of the operational complexities of coordinating multiple user types (customers, riders, partners) and building systems that serve distinct user cohorts.
