The role

Summary

Mural is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead their Data Modeling team, responsible for building and maintaining core data models that drive decision-making across the organization. The ideal candidate will create foundational, reusable data models supporting analytics, product insights, and AI/ML initiatives with a focus on data quality, reliability, and cross-team collaboration.

What you'll do

Data Model Ownership: Define and maintain shared models for product usage, customers, accounts, and key business metrics that support analytics, in-product customer insights, and AI/ML model training
Data Product Development: Build and operate foundational data products using SQL, Python, and Spark in a modern lakehouse environment with emphasis on data quality, availability, performance, and cost management
Semantic Standardization: Design and maintain shared metric definitions and semantic layers to ensure consistent data interpretation across teams and systems
Cross-Functional Leadership: Collaborate closely with Product, Data Platform, Business Analytics, Data Science, ML, and in-product insights teams to align on data strategy and implementation
Technical Direction: Make strategic decisions about modeling standards, architecture, orchestration, and tooling that balance immediate delivery needs with long-term system maintainability

Programming LanguagesAdvanced proficiency in SQL and Python, with strong experience in Spark and modern data lakehouse environments
Data Platform ToolsExperience with Databricks, Airflow, Astronomer, and modern data orchestration platforms
Data ModelingExpertise in building scalable, reusable core data models for SaaS business environments

Education

Degree PreferenceBachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Leadership ExperienceMinimum 2 years leading or formally managing data professionals
Data Modeling Experience6+ years building and owning shared, reusable core data models in modern data platforms

Data LeadershipProven ability to guide data teams and set technical direction
SaaS Data ModelingDeep understanding of product usage and customer data modeling in SaaS environments
Cross-Team CollaborationStrong interpersonal skills to effectively partner with multiple technical and business teams

USD 120,000 – 150,000 (annual)
