Role

What you'll do.

Join Mural's Growth & Engagement team as a Senior Software Engineer to build customer-facing products that drive acquisition, activation, engagement, retention, and monetization. You'll partner with cross-functional teams on experimentation, analytics, and AI-powered collaboration features while mentoring engineers and shaping technical strategy. This role requires 5+ years of production software experience with expertise in TypeScript, React, Node.js, MongoDB, and a strong product mindset balanced with operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Build Customer-Facing Growth Features: Design, architect, and implement customer-facing features that optimize the complete product lifecycle including acquisition, onboarding, activation, engagement, retention, and monetization. Work to improve user conversion funnels, feature adoption rates, and overall customer lifetime value through thoughtful product engineering.
  • Lead Experimentation and A/B Testing Strategy: Design, implement, and analyze product experiments using feature flags, A/B testing, and sophisticated experimentation frameworks to validate hypotheses. Partner with data teams to measure customer behavior impact and drive evidence-based product decisions that inform roadmap prioritization and resource allocation.
  • Build Event Instrumentation and Analytics Pipelines: Architect and maintain reliable event tracking systems, instrumentation, and data pipelines that enable teams to understand customer behavior patterns, funnel performance, and product engagement metrics. Ensure data quality and accessibility for analytics, product intelligence, and business intelligence teams.
  • Collaborate Across Cross-Functional Teams: Partner closely with Product Managers, Designers, Data Scientists, Marketing, and Customer Success teams to identify growth opportunities, translate customer feedback and insights into technical requirements, and align engineering efforts with business goals and customer needs.
  • Optimize Performance, Reliability, and Scalability: Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in critical user journeys, improve system reliability and uptime, enhance accessibility standards, and ensure architecture scales efficiently as user base and data volumes grow. Apply observability and monitoring best practices.
  • Mentor and Lead Technical Excellence: Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, architectural discussions, design collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Establish and maintain high engineering standards, best practices, and operational excellence within the Growth & Engagement team.
  • Contribute to Technical Strategy and Architecture: Shape the technical direction and long-term platform improvements of the Growth & Engagement team. Participate in roadmap planning, architectural decision-making, and continuous improvement of engineering practices that enable rapid iteration without sacrificing code quality.
  • Write High-Quality, Maintainable Code: Develop clean, well-tested, and maintainable code following SOLID principles and software engineering best practices. Conduct thorough code reviews, establish testing standards, and contribute to reducing technical debt while maintaining velocity.

  • TypeScript and Modern Web Development

    Proficiency in TypeScript for building type-safe applications with demonstrated experience building scalable, maintainable web applications. Strong understanding of JavaScript fundamentals, async patterns, and modern tooling ecosystems.

  • React and Frontend Architecture

    Expert-level experience building production React applications with deep knowledge of component architecture, state management patterns, hooks, performance optimization, and frontend testing strategies. Familiarity with common React libraries and ecosystem tools.

  • Node.js and Backend Development

    Strong backend development skills using Node.js for building APIs, services, and server-side systems. Experience with express, REST/GraphQL API design, middleware patterns, and server-side rendering considerations for full-stack applications.

  • MongoDB and Document Database Design

    Hands-on experience designing and optimizing MongoDB schemas, indexing strategies, and query patterns. Understanding of document-oriented data modeling, aggregation pipelines, and scalability considerations for NoSQL databases.

  • A/B Testing and Feature Flagging

    Practical experience designing and implementing experimentation frameworks, feature flag systems, and A/B testing infrastructure. Familiarity with tools like LaunchDarkly, Optimizely, or similar platforms and ability to build custom experimentation systems.

  • Analytics and Event-Driven Architecture

    Experience building event instrumentation, analytics pipelines, and data collection systems. Familiarity with tools like Segment, Mixpanel, Amplitude, or custom event streaming solutions. Understanding of event schema design and data quality principles.

  • System Design and Scalability

    Strong system design fundamentals including service architecture, database optimization, caching strategies, CDN considerations, and load handling. Ability to design systems that scale horizontally and handle growth in users and data.

  • Testing, Observability, and Operational Excellence

    Comprehensive testing knowledge including unit testing, integration testing, and E2E testing. Experience with observability tools, logging, monitoring, tracing, and alerting to ensure production system health and rapid incident response.

  • AI Tooling and Model Context Protocol (MCP)

    Familiarity with emerging AI technologies, LLM tooling ecosystems, and the Model Context Protocol. Experience evaluating and integrating AI-assisted development tools, prompt engineering, and understanding AI capabilities and limitations in production systems.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related Field

    Preferred bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline. Equivalent professional experience and demonstrated technical depth can substitute for formal education.

Experience

  • 5+ Years Production Software Engineering

    Minimum 5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer building, shipping, and operating production-grade software systems. Track record of delivering features from conception through deployment, maintenance, and iteration based on customer feedback.

  • Customer-Facing Product Development

    Demonstrated experience building customer-facing products in close partnership with Product and Design teams. Ability to understand user needs, translate requirements into technical specifications, and iterate based on user feedback and behavioral data.

  • Growth and Engagement Product Experience

    Preferred experience working on Growth, Engagement, or Acquisition teams focused on improving customer lifecycle metrics. Understanding of funnel optimization, activation strategies, retention mechanics, and monetization models from an engineering perspective.

  • Experimentation and Data-Driven Development

    Experience designing, implementing, or analyzing product experiments. Comfort using analytics and data to inform engineering decisions, measure feature impact, and validate technical approaches. Understanding of statistical concepts in experimentation.

  • Technical Leadership and Mentorship

    Track record of mentoring junior engineers, conducting technical interviews, and influencing technical decisions across teams. Demonstrated ability to take ownership of ambiguous problems, drive projects to completion, and establish engineering best practices.

  • AI-Assisted Development Workflows

    Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, or similar tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and delivery velocity. Understanding of best practices for AI tool integration in development workflows.

YOUR MISSION

 As a Senior Software Engineer on the Growth & Engagement team, you'll build the products, platforms, and experimentation capabilities that help customers discover value faster and achieve more with our product. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and other Engineering teams to identify opportunities, validate ideas through experimentation, and deliver experiences that improve customer outcomes and drive sustainable business growth.

Beyond shipping features, you'll help shape the technical direction of the team, mentor other engineers, and establish engineering practices that enable us to experiment confidently and move quickly.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design, build, and maintain customer-facing features that improve acquisition, activation, engagement, retention, and monetization.

  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Data, Marketing, and Customer Success to identify growth opportunities and translate customer feedback, product analytics, and experimentation to guide product decisions.

  • Design, implement, and analyze experiments using feature flags, A/B testing, and analytics to validate hypotheses and measure customer and business impact.

  • Build reliable instrumentation and event pipelines that help teams understand customer behavior and make informed product decisions.
