The role
Summary
Join Mural's Growth & Engagement team as a Senior Software Engineer to build customer-facing products that drive acquisition, activation, engagement, retention, and monetization. You'll partner with cross-functional teams on experimentation, analytics, and AI-powered collaboration features while mentoring engineers and shaping technical strategy. This role requires 5+ years of production software experience with expertise in TypeScript, React, Node.js, MongoDB, and a strong product mindset balanced with operational excellence.
What you'll do
Design and Build Customer-Facing Growth Features: Design, architect, and implement customer-facing features that optimize the complete product lifecycle including acquisition, onboarding, activation, engagement, retention, and monetization. Work to improve user conversion funnels, feature adoption rates, and overall customer lifetime value through thoughtful product engineering.
Lead Experimentation and A/B Testing Strategy: Design, implement, and analyze product experiments using feature flags, A/B testing, and sophisticated experimentation frameworks to validate hypotheses. Partner with data teams to measure customer behavior impact and drive evidence-based product decisions that inform roadmap prioritization and resource allocation.
Build Event Instrumentation and Analytics Pipelines: Architect and maintain reliable event tracking systems, instrumentation, and data pipelines that enable teams to understand customer behavior patterns, funnel performance, and product engagement metrics. Ensure data quality and accessibility for analytics, product intelligence, and business intelligence teams.
Collaborate Across Cross-Functional Teams: Partner closely with Product Managers, Designers, Data Scientists, Marketing, and Customer Success teams to identify growth opportunities, translate customer feedback and insights into technical requirements, and align engineering efforts with business goals and customer needs.
Optimize Performance, Reliability, and Scalability: Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in critical user journeys, improve system reliability and uptime, enhance accessibility standards, and ensure architecture scales efficiently as user base and data volumes grow. Apply observability and monitoring best practices.
Mentor and Lead Technical Excellence: Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, architectural discussions, design collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Establish and maintain high engineering standards, best practices, and operational excellence within the Growth & Engagement team.
Contribute to Technical Strategy and Architecture: Shape the technical direction and long-term platform improvements of the Growth & Engagement team. Participate in roadmap planning, architectural decision-making, and continuous improvement of engineering practices that enable rapid iteration without sacrificing code quality.
Write High-Quality, Maintainable Code: Develop clean, well-tested, and maintainable code following SOLID principles and software engineering best practices. Conduct thorough code reviews, establish testing standards, and contribute to reducing technical debt while maintaining velocity.

System Design and ScalabilityStrong system design fundamentals including service architecture, database optimization, caching strategies, CDN considerations, and load handling. Ability to design systems that scale horizontally and handle growth in users and data.
Testing, Observability, and Operational ExcellenceComprehensive testing knowledge including unit testing, integration testing, and E2E testing. Experience with observability tools, logging, monitoring, tracing, and alerting to ensure production system health and rapid incident response.
AI Tooling and Model Context Protocol (MCP)Familiarity with emerging AI technologies, LLM tooling ecosystems, and the Model Context Protocol. Education
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related FieldPreferred bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline. Equivalent professional experience and demonstrated technical depth can substitute for formal education.
Experience
5+ Years Production Software EngineeringMinimum 5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer building, shipping, and operating production-grade software systems. Track record of delivering features from conception through deployment, maintenance, and iteration based on customer feedback.
Customer-Facing Product DevelopmentDemonstrated experience building customer-facing products in close partnership with Product and Design teams. Ability to understand user needs, translate requirements into technical specifications, and iterate based on user feedback and behavioral data.
Growth and Engagement Product ExperiencePreferred experience working on Growth, Engagement, or Acquisition teams focused on improving customer lifecycle metrics. Understanding of funnel optimization, activation strategies, retention mechanics, and monetization models from an engineering perspective.
Experimentation and Data-Driven DevelopmentExperience designing, implementing, or analyzing product experiments. Comfort using analytics and data to inform engineering decisions, measure feature impact, and validate technical approaches. Understanding of statistical concepts in experimentation.
Technical Leadership and MentorshipTrack record of mentoring junior engineers, conducting technical interviews, and influencing technical decisions across teams. Demonstrated ability to take ownership of ambiguous problems, drive projects to completion, and establish engineering best practices.
