Summary

Notion is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Search & Context Platform team, responsible for developing cutting-edge search infrastructure and context primitives that power Notion's AI-driven collaborative workspace. The ideal candidate will manage a high-performing technical team, balancing platform investments with rapid product iteration while supporting Notion's mission of transforming how teams work together in the AI era.

What you'll do

Platform Leadership: Lead a high-performing platform team responsible for search infrastructure, including lexical and semantic search, indexing, and context/memory primitives for Notion's agents
Strategic Roadmap Development: Set a clear roadmap balancing foundational platform investments with rapid iteration on new indexing capabilities and context features
Reliability and Performance: Maintain high reliability standards through SLOs, observability, on-call health, and proactive incident prevention
Cross-Team Collaboration: Partner closely with Search & Context product team, AI team, and other platform consumers to develop optimal interfaces and capabilities
Team Development: Build and lead the team through strategic hiring, coaching, professional growth, and creating an environment for top technical talent
Engineering Practice Contribution: Contribute to broader engineering practices around platform design, reliability, on-call processes, and AI-era infrastructure

Technical

Search Systems ExpertiseDeep understanding of search, retrieval, and large-scale data/indexing systems including lexical search, semantic search, and hybrid retrieval
Platform ManagementExperience product managing infrastructure platforms, evaluating technical architectures, and defining SLAs
System DesignStrong judgment in scalability, performance, security, and enterprise-ready system design

Education

Advanced DegreeBachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Leadership Experience4+ years of experience leading engineering teams with a proven track record of shipping high-quality systems in fast-paced environments
Platform DevelopmentDemonstrated ability to manage platform scope, make prioritization decisions, and support internal customer teams

Skills

Required skills

Technical ManagementTechnically-leaning management style with ability to engage deeply in technical discussions and architecture
Search TechnologiesProficiency in lexical and semantic search technologies, including BM25, embeddings, and vector indexing
Platform StrategyAbility to make strategic tradeoffs that balance product velocity with long-term platform health

Nice to have

AI Systems ExperienceExperience building agentic or tool-using systems, or platforms serving LLM-based products
Enterprise Data ManagementFamiliarity with permissioned, multi-tenant enterprise data handling and ACL-aware systems
