Role

What you'll do.

As a Developer Experience Engineer at OpenAI, you'll create compelling technical content, demo applications, and developer tools that showcase best practices for building with frontier AI models, Codex, and multimodal capabilities. You'll engage directly with the developer community across APAC, representing OpenAI at events while gathering feedback to inform product improvements. This role combines strong full-stack engineering skills with a passion for developer advocacy, requiring fluency in AI/LLM development and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Demos and Sample Applications: Build compelling demo applications and sample code that showcase best practices for implementing Codex, frontier models, multimodal capabilities, and AI-powered agents. These artifacts serve as reference implementations that accelerate developer adoption and demonstrate innovative use cases for OpenAI's technology stack.
  • Create Technical Content and Educational Materials: Produce high-quality technical content including tutorials, blog posts, video guides, documentation, and code samples that educate and inspire the developer community. Content should demystify complex AI concepts and provide actionable guidance for building production-ready applications with OpenAI's APIs and models.
  • Engage with Developer Communities: Foster and actively nurture vibrant developer ecosystems in Korea and across the APAC region. Build authentic relationships with developers, technical founders, and community leaders to understand pain points, celebrate successes, and create opportunities for peer-to-peer learning within the OpenAI developer community.
  • Represent OpenAI at Developer Events and Online: Serve as a knowledgeable and approachable advocate for developers at conferences, meetups, webinars, and online forums. Deliver technical presentations, lead workshops, participate in panel discussions, and engage in community conversations to build OpenAI's brand as a developer-first organization committed to AI excellence.
  • Gather and Synthesize Developer Feedback: Collect, analyze, and synthesize qualitative and quantitative feedback from developers using OpenAI's products. Identify patterns, surface user pain points, and translate insights into actionable product recommendations that inform the technical roadmap and shape product strategy across APIs, Codex, and other developer tools.
  • Drive Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product, engineering, research, and go-to-market teams to align developer experience initiatives with business objectives. Break down silos by facilitating communication between teams, championing developer needs internally, and collaborating on launch strategies to drive adoption across OpenAI's developer products.
  • Contribute to Product Refinement: Actively participate in improving OpenAI's developer products, interfaces, and surfaces through hands-on testing, usability feedback, and direct contributions. Identify friction points in the developer journey from onboarding through API integration to production deployment, and propose solutions that enhance the overall experience.
  • Own End-to-End Ownership of Challenges: Take full ownership of complex projects from conception through execution, proactively identifying gaps, developing new skills as needed, and driving solutions to completion. Demonstrate entrepreneurial initiative in a dynamic environment with rapidly evolving priorities, ambiguity, and competing deadlines.
  • Travel for Community Building: Travel across APAC regions approximately 30% of the time to meet developers in person, support local events, build relationships with communities, and strengthen OpenAI's presence in key markets. These trips are essential for maintaining authentic connections and understanding regional nuances in developer needs and market dynamics.

Technical

  • Full-Stack Software Development

    Demonstrated expertise in building end-to-end applications using modern programming languages and frameworks. You should have shipped production-grade code and understand the complete development lifecycle from architecture through deployment and monitoring.

  • AI and Large Language Model (LLM) Development

    Hands-on experience building applications powered by large language models, transformer-based architectures, and generative AI capabilities. You should be comfortable working with APIs, fine-tuning, prompt engineering, and integrating advanced AI models into real-world applications.

  • API Integration and Cloud Development

    Strong proficiency in integrating third-party APIs, working with REST/GraphQL interfaces, and building scalable applications on cloud platforms. You should understand authentication, rate limiting, error handling, and best practices for production API consumption.

  • Technical Content Creation

    Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, accessible written and visual content. Experience creating tutorials, documentation, code examples, and educational materials that help other developers understand and implement new technologies effectively.

  • Multi-Modal AI Capabilities

    Understanding of multimodal AI systems that combine text, image, video, and audio processing. You should be familiar with concepts like vision transformers, text-to-image generation, and how to integrate these capabilities into developer-friendly applications and APIs.

  • Codex Code Generation Experience

    Practical experience working with code generation models like Codex or similar systems. You should understand how AI can assist in software development and be able to demonstrate effective use cases and best practices for incorporating code generation into developer workflows.

Education

  • Computer Science or Related Field (Preferred)

    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent field preferred. A strong academic foundation in algorithms, data structures, and theoretical computer science is valuable but not required if offset by exceptional practical experience.

  • Continuous Learning and Professional Development

    Demonstrated commitment to staying current with latest AI developments, programming paradigms, and developer tools. This could include attendance at technical conferences, completion of advanced courses, contributions to open-source projects, or active engagement with technical communities.

  • Language Proficiency

    Korean language skills are required for this role due to focus on local community engagement in Korea. Fluency in spoken and written Korean enables authentic relationship-building and culturally appropriate content creation for the Korean developer market.

Experience

  • Full-Stack Engineering Background

    Minimum 3-5 years of professional software engineering experience spanning frontend, backend, and infrastructure domains. You should have successfully shipped multiple production applications and understand the full spectrum of technical challenges in modern software development.

  • AI Application Development

    Proven track record building and deploying applications that leverage AI and large language models. This could include chatbots, content generation tools, semantic search systems, or other AI-native applications that demonstrate deep understanding of both AI capabilities and practical engineering constraints.

  • Technical Content and Developer Advocacy

    Established experience creating engaging technical content, compelling demos, sample applications, or developer tooling that has driven technology adoption. This could include open-source projects, technical blog posts with significant readership, popular video tutorials, or tools widely used by developers.

  • Developer Community Engagement

    Direct experience engaging with developer communities through events, online forums, mentorship, or community leadership. You should have demonstrated ability to build authentic relationships, understand developer pain points, and translate feedback into product or content improvements.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

    Experience working effectively across product, engineering, design, and marketing teams in fast-paced environments. You should have a track record of breaking down communication barriers, championing user needs, and driving alignment on shared objectives.

  • Python

    Expert-level proficiency in Python for building AI applications, data processing, and backend services. You should be comfortable with async programming, working with ML frameworks, and writing performant, maintainable code at production scale.

  • JavaScript/TypeScript

    Strong competency in JavaScript or TypeScript for building modern web applications and integrating AI capabilities into web frontends. Understanding of async patterns, API integration, and modern framework paradigms is essential.

  • API Design and Integration

    Comprehensive understanding of REST APIs, webhook systems, and best practices for consuming third-party APIs. You should understand authentication mechanisms, error handling, pagination, and how to design developer-friendly API experiences.

  • LLM Prompting and Fine-Tuning
