The role

Summary

OpenAI is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Order Systems team within Financial Engineering, responsible for building and operating critical billing, invoicing, and order management workflows. This role requires 7+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years in leadership, focusing on revenue platform integration and distributed systems design.

What you'll do

Team Leadership: Lead and grow a team of engineers responsible for order management automation, focusing on reliability, correctness, and smooth customer onboarding
Architecture Ownership: Own the architecture and roadmap for order data flows into downstream systems including internal provisioning services, billing/invoicing services, and revenue workflows
Workflow Automation: Build and operate resilient workflows and services that automate entitlements, provisioning, usage controls, SKU attribution, invoice generation/delivery, and revenue recognition
Process Improvement: Improve accuracy and timeliness of provisioning, billing, and invoicing by reducing manual intervention and operational load through automation, validation, and reconciliations
Operational Excellence: Establish strong operational practices including observability, alerting, runbooks, and on-call procedures to maintain system health without constant human oversight
Cross-functional Partnership: Partner with Sales Operations, Finance, Accounting, Support, Product, Security, and Compliance teams to translate requirements into resilient, auditable workflows
Strategic Planning: Drive clarity across ambiguous problem spaces and evolving product offerings by creating frameworks and abstractions that scale with OpenAI's commercial growth
Technical Leadership: Set high engineering standards through technical direction, design reviews, mentoring, and fostering a culture of ownership and continuous improvement
People Management: Teach and level up engineers, recruit and retain talent, manage stakeholders, and scope work to balance customer needs with realistic deliverables

Systems DesignStrong expertise in systems design, data modeling, and building reliable distributed services and workflows
Revenue Platform IntegrationExperience integrating revenue platforms including CPQ, billing, invoicing, revenue recognition, and entitlement systems
Commerce SystemsExperience building or operating complex commerce and SaaS ordering systems
Financial SystemsExperience in domains requiring correctness, auditability, and reconciliation such as payments, ERP/finance systems, or invoicing/revenue recognition
Customer-Facing SystemsAbility to lead or partner on customer-facing billing experiences with focus on clarity, accessibility, and trust

Education

Bachelor's DegreeBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field preferred but not required with equivalent experience
