Summary

Perplexity AI is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the critical billing platform team, responsible for monetizing their AI products through sophisticated, scalable payment systems. The ideal candidate will drive technical strategy, team development, and ensure robust, flexible billing infrastructure that supports innovative pricing models for their agentic commerce solutions.

What you'll do

Team Leadership: Lead and develop a high-performing engineering team, maintaining technical excellence and rapid delivery cadence

Technical Vision: Define strategic technical direction for the billing platform, creating flexible abstractions to enable rapid product monetization and pricing experiments

Reliability Engineering: Establish robust SLOs, proactive monitoring, and ensure billing system reliability with minimal revenue-impacting incidents

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Finance, Data Science, Growth, Legal, and Security teams to maintain accurate, auditable, and compliant billing infrastructure

Monetization Acceleration: Drive rapid time-to-market for new monetization models, ensuring billing platform evolves alongside agentic product innovations

Payment Optimization: Expand global payment method coverage and optimize authorization rates to improve customer conversion

Operational Excellence: Build a culture of excellence through comprehensive internal tooling, runbooks, and on-call practices

Technical

Payment Systems ExpertiseDeep understanding of payment processors, billing systems, subscriptions, and complex monetization infrastructures

System DesignAbility to review complex system designs, debug production billing issues, and make informed architectural decisions

API DesignStrong skills in designing platform boundaries and creating clean, extensible API architectures

Education

Technical DegreeBachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Engineering ManagementMinimum 3 years of engineering management experience with 8+ years total industry experience

Billing Team LeadershipDirect experience leading payments, billing, subscription, or monetization engineering teams

High-Reliability SystemsProven track record operating mission-critical systems where accuracy directly impacts revenue
