Role

What you'll do.

Join Teamworks as the inaugural Engineering Manager for the Inventory Management team undergoing a full platform re-architecture from legacy systems to modern, scalable infrastructure. This hybrid role based in Belfast offers the opportunity to establish management foundations from scratch while leading a talented early-career engineering cohort through a critical re-platform initiative. You'll drive roadmap ownership, capacity planning, and technical mentorship across a high-potential team rebuilding one of the Operating System for Sports' core modules.

Responsibilities

  • Inventory Management V2 Roadmap Ownership: Own and drive the complete IM V2 roadmap in partnership with the Product Manager and GM of Operations. Manage priorities spanning legacy IM system support, net-new customer onboarding flows, and orchestrate the ongoing migration strategy from legacy to V2 platforms. This includes defining quarterly milestones, managing technical dependencies, and ensuring seamless product transitions across your engineering team.
  • Team Planning and Capacity Management: Drive issue assignment, sprint planning, capacity allocation, and milestone delivery cadence for your Belfast-based engineering team. Establish efficient work distribution processes, identify and mitigate bottlenecks, and ensure realistic delivery timelines. Balance technical depth with velocity by strategically assigning work according to team member skills and growth opportunities.
  • Early-Career Engineer Development and Coaching: Build and execute comprehensive individual growth plans for a team composed primarily of apprentice and early-career software engineers. Track formal apprenticeship learning requirements, provide hands-on technical mentorship, and create structured pathways for career progression. Coach team members in foundational software engineering practices, code quality standards, and professional development.
  • Cross-Team Engineering Collaboration: Partner actively with other engineering managers across Teamworks to establish consistent apprentice support standards, knowledge-sharing practices, and technical integration protocols. Facilitate inter-team communication, align on shared technical decisions, and help your team contribute to broader platform initiatives beyond the IM domain.
  • Technical Leadership and Code Review Oversight: Provide substantive technical feedback on your team's code while demonstrating strong technical judgment across Ruby on Rails and React implementations. Conduct code reviews, establish quality standards, and ensure architectural decisions align with platform modernization goals. Maintain enough hands-on technical engagement to make informed decisions about technical debt and technology choices.
  • In-Person Team Leadership in Belfast: Build and maintain team culture through hybrid work leadership, with expected in-office presence approximately two days per week. Establish psychological safety, foster innovation, and create an inclusive environment where early-career engineers can thrive and rapidly accelerate their technical capabilities within the Inventory Management platform.

Full posting

Original listing.

I'm Matt Witkowicz, Senior Director, Engineering at Teamworks. Our Inventory Management (IM) team is in the middle of a full re-platform of our IM product, rebuilding it from the ground up from an acquired system into a modern Teamworks product, and it's picking up speed fast.

I'm hiring our first-ever Engineering Manager for this team. You'll take over ownership of how this team plans, ships, and grows, bringing structure to day-to-day execution while giving a talented early-career team the coaching and technical guidance they need to keep accelerating. You'll also help shape how we support the team in Belfast, where this group is based and where in-person leadership will matter.

The Role

  • Own the IM V2 roadmap in close partnership with our Product Manager and GM of Operations, spanning both legacy IM support, net-new customer onboarding, and the ongoing migration to V2

  • Drive issue assignment, capacity planning, and milestone delivery across a Belfast-based engineering team.

  • Build and run individual growth plans for a team weighted toward apprentice and early-career engineers, including tracking apprenticeship learning requirements and helping teammates build enough practical experience to progress through their programs

  • Partner with other engineering managers across Teamworks to align on apprentice standards and support cross-team integrations

What I'm Looking For

What You Must Bring

  • Strong Ruby on Rails experience, with enough React familiarity to understand the full product surface and enough technical depth to review and give substantive feedback on your team's code

  • Proven people management experience, ideally 2+ years of managing engineers across a range of skill levels

  • A background of 6+ years as a hands-on software engineer; this is not a coding-heavy role, but it does require strong technical judgment

  • Experience partnering closely with other engineering teams; Teamworks runs on strong collaboration between EMs and product owners

  • Based within a reasonable commute of Belfast; this is a hybrid role, and in-office presence will be expected a couple of days per week to support the team

Even Better If

  • You have Infrastructure as Code experience

  • You've worked hands-on with AI tooling, some of our IM V2 features are built on AI/LLMs and our team uses AI tooling day to day

  • You've had exposure to government programs like grants or apprenticeship schemes, especially in Northern Ireland or the UK

Why This Role

You'd be the first Engineering Manager this team has ever had, building the management foundation from scratch rather than inheriting someone else's system. You'll also get real ownership over a fast-moving re-platform in a growing part of the business, while mentoring a high-potential early-career team through a meaningful stage of their development.

This role is not eligible for sponsorship at this time.
