Summary

Xero is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Small Business Experience (SBEX) team in Melbourne, focusing on enhancing the company's front-end competitiveness. The ideal candidate will build a high-performing team, drive technical excellence, and leverage modern web technologies to improve product delivery and user experience.

What you'll do

Team Leadership: Build and lead a new eight-person engineering team focusing on front-end development for Xero's Small Business Experience platform

Technical Strategy: Define and execute engineering plans that align with business goals, focusing on front-end competitiveness and technical excellence

Performance Optimization: Drive systematic improvements in web performance and reliability by defining metrics, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing sustainable solutions

AI Integration: Champion AI-assisted engineering workflows to enhance development velocity and reduce operational overhead

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product and Design teams to ensure technical decisions balance speed, quality, and user experience

Front-End TechnologiesExtensive experience with React, TypeScript, Single Page Applications (SPA), and Micro-Frontend (MFE) architectures

System DesignStrong architectural understanding of front-end systems, including deployment, observability, and error handling strategies

Performance EngineeringProven ability to analyze and improve web application performance metrics

Education

Educational BackgroundBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Leadership ExperienceDemonstrated track record of coaching and developing engineering talent, with experience in performance management

Cross-Cutting EngineeringExperience with design system implementations, shared UI libraries, or front-end pipeline development
