What you'll do.
Lead multiple engineering teams at Xero, a global cloud-based accounting platform, driving high-quality software delivery for hundreds of thousands of small business customers. This Head of Engineering role combines technical leadership with people management, requiring deep expertise in software architecture, team growth, and strategic delivery of AI-first initiatives while managing technical modernization efforts in a fast-scaling environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and Scale Multiple Engineering Teams: Direct and grow multiple engineering teams within your product portfolio, establishing technical direction, mentoring engineering leads, and building high-performing teams that deliver consistently. Maintain visibility into team velocity, code quality, and engineer satisfaction while fostering a culture of ownership and accountability across all reporting lines.
- Drive Technical Architecture and System Health: Act as the technical anchor for your product portfolio, maintaining informed perspectives on system health, code quality, and architectural decisions. Lead technical modernization initiatives including transitioning from monolithic architectures to decoupled microservices and implementing API-first integration patterns to improve scalability and maintainability.
- Champion AI-First Development Methodologies: Advocate for and implement responsible AI architecture and AI-powered workflows across engineering teams. Guide adoption of AI-first development practices to unlock productivity gains, accelerate time-to-value, and ensure teams leverage AI tools effectively while maintaining code quality and security standards.
- Execute Complex Cross-Functional Programs: Plan and execute sophisticated, cross-team programs of work with clear ownership structures and proactive risk management. Collaborate with Product, Design, and other engineering leaders to balance customer, business, and technical priorities, ensuring reliable delivery of results within defined timelines.
- Raise Operational Excellence Standards: Own production service reliability and quality through implementation of strong observability practices, incident management processes, and continuous improvement initiatives. Establish metrics for reliability, performance, and availability, driving teams toward best-in-class operational excellence.
- Define Hiring Strategies and Talent Development: Develop and execute comprehensive hiring strategies to attract and grow high-performing engineering talent. Create career progression frameworks, mentorship programs, and professional development opportunities to sustain high performance standards and support long-term team growth.
- Foster Inclusive Team Culture and Psychological Safety: Build and maintain an inclusive, positive team culture anchored on customer obsession and high support principles. Demonstrate high emotional intelligence by being self-aware, self-regulated, empathetic, and conflict-resolute, creating psychological safety that encourages innovation and risk-taking.
- Partner Cross-Functionally on Product Strategy: Collaborate closely with Product and Design leadership to ensure engineering priorities align with product vision and business objectives. Participate in strategic planning, capacity forecasting, and portfolio management discussions to optimize resource allocation and delivery capabilities.

Technical
Deep Software Architecture Expertise
Comprehensive understanding of software architecture patterns, design trade-offs, system scalability, and technical debt management at enterprise scale. Ability to evaluate architectural decisions, mentor teams on design principles, and guide modernization efforts from monolithic to service-oriented architectures.
Cloud Platform and Distributed Systems Knowledge
Strong background with cloud-based platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), microservices architectures, API design patterns, and distributed system principles. Experience managing systems serving hundreds of thousands of concurrent users with reliability and performance requirements.
AI and Machine Learning Integration Experience
Demonstrated experience incorporating AI/ML capabilities into production systems, understanding of large language models, responsible AI principles, and ability to guide teams on AI-first development approaches and workflow automation.
Production Operations and Reliability
Deep knowledge of observability platforms, incident management, SRE principles, monitoring, alerting, and continuous deployment practices. Experience establishing reliability standards (SLOs/SLAs) and driving operational excellence across distributed teams.
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related Field
Formal education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent discipline demonstrating foundational technical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Advanced Technical Certifications (Preferred)
Additional certifications in cloud platforms (AWS Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional), system design, or specialized technical domains can strengthen candidacy but are not required for experienced leaders with proven technical depth.
Experience
Engineering Leadership at Scale
Proven track record of successfully managing and growing multiple high-performing engineering teams (typically 30-100+ engineers across multiple teams). Demonstrated ability to develop leaders, create career progression paths, and maintain high performance standards across geographically distributed or complex organizational structures.
Technical Leadership in Fast-Scaling Environments
Experience leading engineering initiatives in rapidly growing companies or product lines with changing priorities, ambiguous requirements, and technical complexity. Proven ability to make strategic technical decisions under uncertainty and guide teams through significant transformations.
Cross-Functional Program Delivery
Success executing complex, multi-team initiatives requiring coordination across Product, Design, Operations, and other functions. Experience managing dependencies, risk mitigation, and maintaining accountability in matrix organizational structures.
SaaS or Cloud Platform Product Experience
Background building or scaling SaaS products with significant customer bases, understanding of subscription business models, customer success metrics, and the relationship between technical decisions and business outcomes for cloud-based platforms.
Team Culture and People Development
Track record of building inclusive, high-performing team cultures with emphasis on psychological safety, diversity, and belonging. Experience mentoring emerging leaders, conducting performance management, and navigating team conflicts constructively.

Compensation & Total Rewards

The expected base salary range for this role is $227,700 - $284,600 CAD.
Individual pay is determined by various factors, including geography, level of experience, and the specific skills you bring to the role.
In addition to base pay, Xero’s roles are eligible for the following forms of variable compensation:
