The role

Summary

Lead the Compute Services team at 1Password, managing engineers responsible for the core infrastructure powering our platform including Kubernetes orchestration, auto-scaling, and continuous delivery systems. You'll mentor a specialized engineering team, drive strategic technical direction, and ensure resilient, observable infrastructure supporting 180,000+ businesses globally while working in a remote-first, fast-paced environment.

What you'll do

Set Strategic Direction: Establish and support strategic direction for the Compute Services team, aligning infrastructure initiatives with broader company objectives and long-term technical vision.
Drive Team Performance & Accountability: Drive alignment and take responsibility for team results that support company objectives, ensuring accountability for infrastructure reliability, performance, and delivery metrics.
Lead Technical Vision: Collaborate with senior individual contributors to create an engaging technical vision for Compute Services, maintaining deep understanding of cloud-native infrastructure, Kubernetes, container orchestration, auto-scaling, and GitOps practices.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with engineering teams across the organization and internal/external stakeholders to define optimal solutions for infrastructure services, ensuring alignment with customer and business needs.
Project Planning & Execution: Scope, plan, and deliver key infrastructure projects and initiatives with emphasis on iterations, quality, velocity, and transparent communication with stakeholders.
Provide Technical Leadership: Deliver technical leadership to engineers both within the Compute Services team and across the broader engineering organization, maintaining credibility in cloud infrastructure domains.
Coach & Develop Engineers: Coach individual contributors to reach their full potential through mentorship, constructive feedback, performance management, and identifying growth opportunities in infrastructure engineering.
Talent Acquisition & Retention: Recruit and retain top-tier infrastructure engineering talent in a fast-growing environment, creating a positive team culture that attracts and develops specialized infrastructure experts.
Scale Team Capabilities: Continuously scale the Compute Services team by collaborating with peer Engineering Managers to refine hiring criteria, onboarding processes, and professional development programs.
Maintain Team Environment: Foster a positive, healthy team environment where everyone is supported, encouraged, and meaningfully challenged to produce high-quality resilient systems and deliver observable infrastructure.

Kubernetes & Container OrchestrationExpert knowledge of Kubernetes administration, deployment strategies, and container orchestration best practices for production systems.
Cloud Infrastructure PlatformsWorking knowledge of major cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their infrastructure services relevant to containerized workloads and distributed systems.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related FieldTypically holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating advanced infrastructure engineering knowledge.

Experience

Team Management ExperienceProven experience managing and scaling engineering teams, with demonstrated ability to mentor, develop, and build high-performing squads in distributed environments.
Cloud-Native Infrastructure ExpertiseSignificant hands-on or deep working knowledge with cloud-native infrastructure, backend technologies, microservices architecture, and platform engineering. While coding proficiency is not required, you must be able to fluently discuss complex technical issues and architectural decisions.
Kubernetes & Container OrchestrationDemonstrated experience with Kubernetes, container orchestration platforms, and related cloud infrastructure patterns. Understanding of auto-scaling, resource optimization, and cluster management is essential.
Infrastructure Scaling ExperienceProven track record of helping teams scale both their engineering capabilities and the infrastructure services they maintain, with experience handling growth challenges and technical debt management.
Remote Team LeadershipExperience successfully managing remote or distributed engineering teams with excellent async communication practices, time zone coordination, and fostering collaboration in remote-first environments.
