The role

Summary

The Engineering Manager for Realtime Data Platform role at Airwallex involves leading a team within the Knowledge Platform to build foundational AI and data infrastructure. This position requires scaling engineering teams of 10+ people while defining multi-year technical roadmaps for petabyte-scale real-time analytical processing systems.

What you'll do

Strategic Vision: Define and execute 1-3 year strategic roadmap for Realtime Data Platform with clear business alignment

Platform Modernization: Lead multi-year effort to modernize core data platform introducing real-time analytical processing at petabyte scale

Cross-functional Partnership: Partner with product teams to enable AI-powered applications and real-time dashboards through platform capabilities

Team Scaling: Scale and structure engineering teams including hiring new talent and mentoring managers and senior individual contributors

Technical Advisory: Serve as trusted technical advisor on Data and AI initiatives across product and engineering teams

Architecture Leadership: Drive technical architecture decisions for distributed data processing and event streaming systems

Stakeholder Management: Maintain strong relationships with leadership and communicate technical strategy to diverse audiences

Distributed Systems ExpertiseDeep understanding of Apache Spark, Databricks, and Kafka for large-scale data processing

Data Storage TechnologiesSolid knowledge of CubeJS, ElasticSearch, ClickHouse and modern data serving technologies

Observability ToolsFamiliarity with Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus for monitoring distributed systems

Lakehouse ArchitectureExperience designing data processing patterns for modern Lakehouse architecture

Education

Bachelor's DegreeComputer Science, Data Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Advanced DegreeMaster's degree in relevant field advantageous for senior leadership role

Experience

Leadership ExperienceMinimum 3 years in engineering leadership or management role

Team ManagementProven experience managing and scaling engineering teams of 10+ people including managers

Technical StrategyDemonstrated ability to define and execute technical strategy leading to significant business outcomes

Data Engineering8+ years total experience in data or software engineering domains
