Role

What you'll do.

Senior Software Engineer on the Ecosystem team at Airwallex, a $11B fintech unicorn, driving the architecture and development of developer platforms, API integrations, and extensibility frameworks. This role offers ownership of strategic accounting, marketplace, and payment plugins while establishing technical excellence standards across a cross-functional team. You'll build scalable infrastructure powering third-party integrations connecting external financial institutions, accounting systems, ERPs, and HR platforms—directly enabling 250,000+ global businesses to embed financial operations into their workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Platform Architecture & Strategic Roadmap Leadership: Lead high-level design and long-term technical roadmap for the App Marketplace and Extension Framework. Own architectural decisions that balance scalability, developer experience, and business requirements. Drive strategic initiatives to expand ecosystem capabilities and define technology evolution path supporting Airwallex's vision as a unified payments and financial platform.
  • Extensibility Framework & SDK Development: Design and implement core SDKs, webhooks, and UI-extension patterns enabling third-party developers to embed functionality directly into the Airwallex platform. Build robust APIs connecting external financial institutions, accounting systems (QuickBooks, Xero), ERP platforms, HR solutions, and marketplace integrations. Create flexible, well-documented frameworks that abstract complexity while maintaining security and performance.
  • Technical Excellence & Code Standards: Establish and enforce rigorous internal coding standards, observability patterns, security protocols, and best practices across the team. Conduct architectural reviews, mentor engineers on design patterns, and drive continuous improvement in code quality. Implement comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting strategies ensuring platform reliability and performance optimization.
  • Developer Experience (DX) & Documentation Infrastructure: Champion external developer needs by building world-class documentation, API references, sandbox environments, and developer tooling. Design intuitive integration patterns and comprehensive guides enabling third-party developers to ship features rapidly. Implement developer feedback loops and continuously refine DX based on ecosystem partner requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Feature Delivery: Partner with backend engineers, product managers, designers, and go-to-market teams to design, develop, and ship secure, reliable experiences simplifying financial operations. Transform product requirements into technical roadmaps, propose new technologies and architectural patterns, and drive end-to-end delivery of innovative ecosystem features unlocking new use cases on the Airwallex platform.
  • Integration Architecture & Third-Party Platform Management: Own design and implementation of integration strategies connecting Airwallex with complementary software platforms (accounting, HR, ERP, marketplace solutions). Manage API contracts, versioning strategies, and backward compatibility considerations. Evaluate emerging integration technologies and APIs to expand ecosystem capabilities serving diverse customer needs.
  • Scalable Infrastructure & System Design: Develop scalable solutions supporting ecosystem strategy and exponential growth across 250,000+ businesses. Design systems handling high-volume API traffic, implementing resilient patterns like circuit breakers, rate limiting, and async processing. Optimize infrastructure costs while maintaining performance, leveraging cloud-native technologies and modern deployment strategies.
  • AI/LLM Integration & Developer Tooling Enhancement: Explore and integrate AI/LLM models to automate integration workflows, enhance developer productivity, and provide intelligent documentation and code generation capabilities. Design developer tools that leverage emerging technologies to reduce integration complexity and accelerate time-to-value for third-party partners.

Technical

  • Multi-Language Proficiency

    Expert-level proficiency in Java, Kotlin, C++, Python, or similar modern languages with deep knowledge of standard libraries, idiomatic usage patterns, and best practices. Demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable code and mentor others on language-specific excellence.

  • Microservices & API Architecture

    Extensive hands-on experience designing, building, and maintaining distributed microservices architectures and public-facing APIs. Expertise in REST/GraphQL design, API versioning strategies, rate limiting, authentication/authorization (OAuth2, JWT), and managing API contracts across multiple consumer types.

  • Domain-Driven Design (DDD)

    Deep expertise in Domain-Driven Design methodologies for managing complex business logic across microservice boundaries. Experience decomposing financial systems into bounded contexts, designing aggregate patterns, and implementing event-driven architectures supporting ecosystem platforms.

  • Cloud-Native Technologies & Infrastructure

    Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, cloud providers (AWS/GCP/Azure), and infrastructure-as-code tools. Proficiency in designing containerized applications, managing orchestration at scale, and implementing cloud-native deployment pipelines and strategies.

  • Observability & Monitoring Patterns

    Advanced expertise implementing comprehensive observability solutions including distributed tracing, structured logging, metrics collection, and alerting strategies. Experience with tools like Datadog, New Relic, ELK Stack, or Prometheus ensuring platform reliability and enabling rapid incident response.

  • Database Design & Optimization

    Expert-level understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), NoSQL solutions (MongoDB, DynamoDB), caching strategies (Redis), and data optimization techniques. Experience designing schemas for high-throughput financial systems and optimizing query performance at scale.

  • Security & Compliance Architecture

    Strong security fundamentals including secure API design, data encryption, secrets management, authentication/authorization patterns, and compliance considerations (SOC 2, PCI-DSS). Experience building security-first systems handling sensitive financial data in regulated environments.

  • Public Developer Platform Experience

    Direct hands-on experience building or maintaining public-facing developer platforms, app marketplaces, extension frameworks, or plugin ecosystems. Understanding of developer needs, SDK design, sandbox environments, and DX-first mindset from personal implementation experience.

  • Financial Systems & Payments Domain Knowledge

    Deep familiarity with financial systems architecture, payment processing workflows, and fintech domain concepts. Understanding of accounting integrations, transaction settlement, reconciliation processes, and regulatory requirements in cross-border payments.

  • AI/LLM Integration & Emerging Technologies

    Experience evaluating and integrating AI/LLM models into production systems. Familiarity with frameworks like LangChain, vector databases, and prompt engineering for automating integration workflows or enhancing developer tooling capabilities.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related Field

    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent field. Advanced degrees (Master's, PhD) or equivalent intensive technical training programs are valued but not required.

Experience

  • Senior-Level Software Engineering Experience

    Minimum 5+ years developing Internet applications, large-scale financial systems, or e-commerce platforms. Demonstrated progression to senior-level technical responsibilities including architecture design, mentoring, and cross-functional technical leadership.

  • Developer Platform & Ecosystem Building

    Direct experience designing, building, or maintaining public-facing developer platforms, app marketplaces, or extension frameworks. Track record of successful third-party integrations, SDK development, and managing complex ecosystem partnerships.

  • Distributed Systems & Large-Scale Architecture

  • Cross-Functional Technical Leadership

About the Team

Join our Ecosystem team, a cross-functional group of engineers and product partners building the platforms and integrations that connect Airwallex with the software our customers rely on every day. We own strategic accounting, marketplace, payment plugins, and open‑banking integrations, as well as the infrastructure that powers our public APIs that enabling third-party partners to build on top of. You’ll work closely with backend, product, design, and go‑to‑market teams to ship secure, reliable experiences that simplify financial operations for businesses of all sizes and unlock new use cases on top of the Airwallex business account.

 

What you'll do

As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies and contribute to the growth and success of our company. Who you are

We're looking for people who meet the minimum qualifications for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field

  • 5+ years of experience in developing Internet applications, large financial systems, or e-commerce platforms

  • Proficient in coding or scripting languages (Java/Kotlin/C++/Python, etc.)

  • Deep familiarity with the standard library, idiomatic usage, and best practices of your primary programming languages.
