The role
Summary
Airwallex is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their Growth team, focusing on user acquisition and scalable system architecture. The role involves building high-throughput microservices in Java/Kotlin, designing data pipelines, and implementing A/B testing frameworks to drive global business expansion in the fintech space.
What you'll do
Scalable System Design: Architect, develop, and maintain microservices in Java/Kotlin ensuring high-traffic, high-availability systems meet global user demands
Data Pipeline Development: Collaborate with data scientists and product managers to design data pipelines, analytics platforms, and event-driven architectures
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with Frontend, Product, Design, and Marketing teams to translate business requirements into scalable backend solutions
A/B Testing Infrastructure: Develop services that support rapid A/B testing, feature toggles, and real-time performance monitoring
Security Implementation: Integrate secure coding practices and frameworks to protect user data and maintain global regulatory compliance
Code Quality Assurance: Participate in architectural reviews, code reviews, and strategy sessions to elevate backend service quality and performance
System Optimization: Continuously improve backend functionalities to reduce friction, increase user engagement, and drive conversions
What we look for
Technical
JVM ProgrammingStrong expertise in Java or Kotlin with deep understanding of JVM ecosystem
Distributed SystemsExperience with high throughput, low latency, highly available distributed systems
Cloud PlatformsHands-on experience with GCP (preferred) or AWS including EC2, RDS, ELB, CloudFront
ContainerizationProficiency with Docker and Kubernetes for container orchestration
Observability ToolsFamiliarity with monitoring tools like Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus
Software ArchitectureExperience with domain-driven design and event-driven architectures
Object-Oriented ProgrammingSolid understanding of OOP concepts and modern engineering practices
Education
Bachelor's DegreeBachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
Experience
Software Development5+ years of experience in modern engineering practices focused on continuous integration and quality engineering
Backend EngineeringProven track record in backend system development with focus on scalability and performance
Technical LeadershipExperience as a technical bar raiser, setting high standards and mentoring team members

Java/KotlinExpert-level proficiency in JVM-based programming languages for backend development
Spring FrameworkDeep experience with Spring and Spring Boot for enterprise application development
