What you'll do.
Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure at Airwallex is a pivotal role responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the cloud infrastructure and platform systems that power Airwallex's unified payments and financial platform serving over 250,000 global businesses. This position requires deep expertise in distributed systems, Kubernetes orchestration, service mesh architecture, and public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) combined with strong proficiency in Go or Python to ensure scalability, reliability, and security across mission-critical financial infrastructure. You'll work collaboratively with engineering, product, and security teams to automate infrastructure operations, implement Infrastructure as Code solutions, and solve complex distributed systems challenges while maintaining the highest standards of security and performance in a cross-border payments environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and Implement Cloud Infrastructure: Architect and deploy scalable, highly available cloud infrastructure on public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) using Infrastructure as Code principles. Design systems that support Airwallex's mission to process cross-border payments reliably at global scale.
- Kubernetes and Container Orchestration: Build, optimize, and maintain Kubernetes clusters handling millions of transactions. Implement container orchestration strategies, resource management, and autoscaling policies to ensure optimal performance and cost efficiency across distributed systems.
- Service Mesh Architecture and Management: Design and implement service mesh solutions using Istio to manage inter-service communication, enable advanced traffic management, implement security policies, and provide observability across the microservices ecosystem.
- Core Services Development: Develop and maintain critical core infrastructure services in Go or Python that form the foundation of Airwallex's platform. Write production-grade code with comprehensive testing, monitoring, and documentation.
- Security Implementation and Best Practices: Implement robust security practices throughout the infrastructure stack including network security, secrets management, access controls, encryption at rest and in transit, and compliance with financial industry standards.
- Reliability and Performance Optimization: Ensure systems maintain high availability and reliability through strategic design decisions. Monitor performance metrics, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimizations to support payments processing with minimal latency and maximum uptime.
- Automation and DevOps Excellence: Develop automation solutions to eliminate manual operations, streamline deployment pipelines, and improve developer experience. Build self-service platforms that enable engineering teams to operate infrastructure independently.
- Monitoring, Logging, and Observability: Implement comprehensive observability solutions including metrics collection, distributed tracing, log aggregation, and alerting. Ensure full visibility into system behavior to enable rapid incident response and root cause analysis.
- Collaboration and Technical Leadership: Partner with engineering, product, and security teams to align infrastructure decisions with business objectives. Provide technical guidance, conduct design reviews, and mentor team members on infrastructure best practices and architectural patterns.

Technical
Kubernetes Mastery
Production-grade expertise operating Kubernetes clusters at scale. Deep understanding of cluster architecture, networking, storage, resource management, RBAC, and troubleshooting complex multi-cluster deployments.
Public Cloud Platforms
Hands-on proficiency with AWS, GCP, or Azure. Strong knowledge of cloud services including compute, networking, storage, managed databases, and serverless offerings relevant to payments infrastructure.
Infrastructure as Code
Expertise with IaC tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Helm. Ability to define, version, and manage infrastructure declaratively with reproducible deployments.
Service Mesh Architecture
Production experience with Istio or similar service mesh technologies. Understanding of traffic management, security policies, circuit breaking, and observability patterns in microservices environments.
Distributed Systems Design
Deep understanding of distributed system principles including consistency models, consensus algorithms, fault tolerance, and scalability patterns. Ability to design systems handling billions of transactions reliably.
RESTful API Design
Solid understanding of RESTful API design principles, patterns, versioning strategies, and best practices. Ability to design APIs that integrate seamlessly with internal and external systems.
Programming Languages
Expert-level proficiency in Go (preferred) or Python for writing scalable backend services. Strong software engineering fundamentals including testing, error handling, concurrency, and performance optimization.
Security Best Practices
Hands-on experience implementing security measures including TLS/mTLS configuration, secrets management, network policies, authentication/authorization, audit logging, and compliance with regulatory requirements in payments systems.
Observability and Monitoring
Expertise implementing monitoring, logging, and tracing solutions using tools like Prometheus, ELK Stack, Jaeger, or similar. Ability to design alerting strategies and establish SLIs/SLOs.

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science

Experience
Large-Scale Distributed Systems
Minimum 6+ years of professional experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems. Demonstrated ability to design systems handling high volume, low-latency requirements typical of payment processing platforms.
Cloud Infrastructure Management
Minimum 5+ years hands-on experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure). Proven track record of designing, implementing, and managing production infrastructure at scale.
Kubernetes Production Experience
Minimum 4+ years operating Kubernetes in production environments. Experience with cluster management, application deployment strategies, networking, and troubleshooting complex Kubernetes issues.
Backend Services Development
Minimum 5+ years developing production backend services in Go, Python, or similar languages. Strong software engineering practices including testing, documentation, code reviews, and performance optimization.
Infrastructure as Code Implementation
Minimum 3+ years implementing Infrastructure as Code using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Helm. Experience managing complex infrastructure definitions and implementing GitOps practices.
Financial Systems or High-Reliability Services
Experience in fintech, payments, or building mission-critical systems with stringent uptime requirements. Understanding of the complexity, security demands, and regulatory considerations in financial services.

This role is based in Singapore.
Qualifications
6+ years working with large, distributed systems. Solid understanding of RESTful API design principles and patterns.
Deep experience with public cloud (GCP, AWS, or Azure), Infrastructure as Code, and Kubernetes. Experience with Istio service mesh
Ability to write services in Golang(preferred) or Python.
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science or similar field.
Strong security skills and hands-on experience with security best practices.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
For senior software engineers, we expect you to have around 7 years or at least 6 years engineering experience. You should be able to demonstrate more in - depth understanding in the complexity of projects and the design of code systems.
For SDE2 engineers, we expect you to have over 4 years or at least 3 years engineering experience. You should be able to solve problems related to coding and system design independently.
