The role

Summary

Benchling is seeking an experienced Engineering Leader for its Data Input team, responsible for building critical platform components that enable efficient scientific data capture and management. The ideal candidate will lead technical initiatives, drive platform scalability, and develop AI-powered features that support over 90% of Benchling's customers in the biotechnology research and development space.

What you'll do

Team Leadership: Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing team of software engineers, focusing on growing early-to-mid-career engineers into impactful leaders.
Strategic Product Development: Partner with product and design to define roadmap and long-term product strategy, with a focus on foundational technical initiatives and API delivery.
Technical Excellence: Maintain high standards of product quality, perform code reviews, and directly engage with the team's codebase to ensure excellent technical decisions.
Customer Engagement: Meet with customers to understand their scientific workflows and data entry needs in research, development, and manufacturing contexts.
Execution and Planning: Translate strategic vision into actionable quarterly plans with clear metrics and targets.
Organizational Improvement: Contribute to engineering-wide organizational improvements as part of the management team.

Technical

Cloud Application DevelopmentExtensive experience building cloud-based web applications with front-end and back-end expertise
Platform MigrationProven track record of leading complex technical migrations, refactors, and infrastructure projects
AI IntegrationAbility to develop and integrate AI-powered features, including Large Language Models (LLMs) into scientific software workflows

Education

Technical DegreeBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Engineering ManagementMinimum 2 years of engineering management experience
Software EngineeringMinimum 5 years of software engineering experience, with technical lead responsibilities
Cross-Functional CollaborationDemonstrated experience working with product, design, sales, and marketing teams
