The role

Summary

Benchling is seeking an experienced Engineering Leader to drive Infrastructure Engineering, focusing on building and managing cloud infrastructure, services platforms, and leading a high-performing technical team in a cutting-edge biotechnology software environment. The role requires a strategic leader who can balance technical expertise with people management in a regulated, innovative setting.

What you'll do

Team Leadership: Lead and grow infrastructure engineering team through hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development across all team levels.
Infrastructure Strategy: Own delivery of critical infrastructure and services-platform initiatives, focusing on reliability, scalability, cost optimization, security, and compliance-aligned engineering practices.
Reliability Engineering: Drive reliability improvements using SRE principles, including service-level thinking, operational readiness, automation, and resiliency patterns.
Incident Management: Strengthen incident response by improving on-call health, incident processes, postmortems, and follow-up execution in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Cloud Infrastructure: Build and evolve cloud foundations on AWS, including network and compute patterns and Kubernetes-based services.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with Platform Engineering, Security, and Product Engineering to align priorities and deliver shared roadmaps.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure infrastructure changes are traceable, auditable, and appropriately controlled within a regulated GxP/biotech environment.

What we look for

Technical

Cloud InfrastructureExtensive production experience with AWS services including EKS/ECS, RDS, VPC, EC2, and S3
Kubernetes ExpertiseStrong experience with Kubernetes and services-platform patterns like service mesh, ingress, service discovery, and workload isolation
Observability ToolsExperience building operational tooling with platforms like Datadog, FireHydrant, Sentry

Education

Engineering DegreeBachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Leadership ExperienceMinimum 5+ years of people leadership managing engineering teams
Infrastructure EngineeringHands-on software engineering and infrastructure/platform engineering background
Regulated EnvironmentPreferably experience in GxP, biotech, healthcare, or finance sectors with understanding of change control and audit processes

Skills

Required skills

Cloud ComputingAdvanced AWS infrastructure management skills
ProgrammingProficiency in Python, comfort with Go and TypeScript
LeadershipStrong team management and cross-functional communication skills
