The role

Summary

Benchling is seeking a Backend Infrastructure Software Engineer to build and operate critical platform services that power their R&D Cloud for biotechnology innovation. The role focuses on developing scalable, secure cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes platforms, and operational tooling to support product engineering teams in a regulated scientific environment.

What you'll do

Infrastructure Development: Build, maintain, and improve foundational infrastructure and platform services used by product engineering teams
Cloud Platform Management: Develop and operate AWS infrastructure and automation with emphasis on scalability, cost-awareness, and resiliency
Kubernetes Platform Enhancement: Contribute to Kubernetes-based platform, including service configuration, traffic management, and platform tooling
Observability and Reliability: Strengthen system observability through metrics, logs, tracing, dashboards, and alerting
Incident Management: Participate in on-call rotations, respond to incidents, and drive systemic improvements to prevent recurrence
Documentation and Collaboration: Write clear technical documentation and contribute to design discussions and reviews
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure infrastructure meets expectations for operating in a regulated environment

What we look for

Technical

Cloud InfrastructureProficient in AWS services including EKS/ECS, RDS, VPC, EC2, S3
ContainerizationExperience with Kubernetes and container orchestration
Monitoring ToolsFamiliarity with observability tools like Datadog, Sentry, FireHydrant

Education

Computer ScienceBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Software EngineeringMinimum 2+ years of professional software engineering experience
Infrastructure EngineeringPrior experience in infrastructure or platform engineering roles
