Summary

OpenAI is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to found and lead the ChatGPT Infrastructure team in London. This role involves building a high-impact team responsible for core runtime primitives and infrastructure that power ChatGPT experiences. The position requires 7+ years of engineering experience, leadership expertise, and the ability to operate in high-ambiguity, 0→1 environments while establishing technical culture and operational excellence.

What you'll do

Team Leadership: Build and lead a small, talent-dense team responsible for foundational runtime systems powering ChatGPT
Infrastructure Development: Drive development of core infrastructure primitives including runtime frameworks, service integration patterns, and extensibility mechanisms
Technical Architecture: Define and evolve the technical architecture of the ChatGPT runtime to unlock new feature capabilities during rapid growth
Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product and research teams to ensure infrastructure enables rapid development while maintaining reliability
System Reliability: Own reliability of team-built systems including incident response, deployment support, and operational model evolution
Talent Acquisition: Hire and develop the early London team while establishing technical standards, culture, and operating models
Global Integration: Serve as technical leader and connector between London office and broader global ChatGPT infrastructure organization

Distributed Systems ExpertiseDeep experience building large-scale distributed systems, developer platforms, or infrastructure products
Cloud InfrastructureHands-on experience running production systems in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)

Education

Computer Science DegreeBachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Engineering LeadershipProven experience building and leading high-caliber engineering teams, particularly in startup or early-stage initiatives
0-to-1 LeadershipTrack record of operating in high-ambiguity environments, defining problems and building systems from scratch
Technical LeadershipExperience remaining deeply technical as a leader while contributing to architecture and design decisions
