The role

Summary

PostHog is seeking a ClickHouse Operations Engineer to manage and scale their core database infrastructure supporting 100,000+ companies. This role focuses on automating, optimizing, and scaling ClickHouse clusters handling 100+ PB of data, requiring deep OLAP database experience and expertise in infrastructure automation tools.

What you'll do

ClickHouse Infrastructure Management: Automate, manage, and maintain ClickHouse clusters handling over 100 PB of data
Scaling Operations: Build systems for provisioning and scaling large ClickHouse clusters to support trillions of events per year
Performance Optimization: Perform node and instance-level performance optimization for optimal ClickHouse workload performance
Hardware Optimization: Investigate and experiment with latest cloud provider hardware to find optimal setups for data solutions
Infrastructure Automation: Use Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes for dynamic instance provisioning and infrastructure automation
Query Performance Tooling: Work on query optimizer development and performance tooling for ClickHouse
Bleeding Edge Implementation: Work on cutting-edge ClickHouse features like open format backed tables and advanced configurations

OLAP Database ExpertiseDeep experience with ClickHouse internals or other OLAP databases beyond high-level usage
Infrastructure AutomationStrong experience with dynamic instance provisioning using Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes
High-Scale SystemsExperience building and operating high-scale complex data storage solutions
Python ProgrammingProficiency in Python for automation and tooling development
Cloud InfrastructureExperience with AWS cloud services and infrastructure management
Distributed SystemsKnowledge of Zookeeper or similar distributed coordination systems

Experience

OLAP Database OperationsHands-on experience managing and optimizing columnar analytical databases at scale
Large-Scale Data SystemsExperience with petabyte-scale data storage and processing challenges
