Role
What you'll do.
Senior Backend Engineer at Ramp specializing in Accounts Receivable, responsible for building and operating the automated payment-matching and cash application systems that handle billions in transaction flow. This role combines core backend engineering challenges—data model design, API architecture, asynchronous workflows, and ERP integrations—with high-stakes financial domain logic where accuracy must be maintained to the cent. You'll own projects end-to-end from technical design through production monitoring, mentoring engineers, and directly improving financial workflows for thousands of businesses globally.
Responsibilities
- Payment Matching System Architecture: Design and implement intelligent payment-matching algorithms that automatically apply incoming ACH, wire, card, and check payments to correct invoices despite incomplete or inconsistent payment details. This involves building robust matching heuristics, handling edge cases in payment reconciliation, and ensuring zero-knowledge loss in financial transactions.
- Financial Data Model Design: Create and maintain accurate, auditable data models ensuring complete traceability of every dollar from invoice creation through payment to general ledger reconciliation. Design schemas supporting complex financial workflows while maintaining data integrity and enabling efficient querying for reporting and analytics.
- ERP Integration Development: Build and maintain bidirectional integrations with enterprise accounting systems including NetSuite and QuickBooks that preserve data consistency across system boundaries, handle partial failures gracefully, and support editing on both sides without creating conflicts or data corruption.
- Collections Workflow Implementation: Develop automated collections workflows and business logic that accelerate cash collection while maintaining positive customer relationships. Implement dunning management, payment reminder systems, and analytics to optimize collection efficiency across diverse customer bases.
- End-to-End Project Ownership: Take full ownership of backend projects from problem definition and requirements validation through technical design, implementation, testing, production deployment, monitoring setup, and iterative improvements based on real-world usage patterns.
- Engineering Excellence and Mentorship: Raise the technical bar across the team through rigorous design reviews, thorough code reviews, architectural mentorship, and knowledge sharing. Guide junior engineers on system design decisions, production readiness standards, and best practices for building reliable financial infrastructure.
- Production System Reliability: Own operational stability and monitoring for payment processing systems handling billions in annual transaction volume. Implement comprehensive observability, alerting, and incident response procedures to minimize downtime and ensure consistent service delivery.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product managers and design teams to translate complex financial workflows into intuitive, reliable software. Provide technical perspective on product decisions, identify technical blockers early, and push back when specifications don't align with engineering feasibility or financial correctness principles.

About Ramp
Ramp is building the smart infrastructure for finance teams, embedded in the transaction flow of every dollar a business spends. We automate how over $200B in annualized spend flows in and out of 70,000+ companies: authorizing payments, flagging risk, categorizing spend, and closing books.
The problems are high-stakes, data-dense, and unforgiving.
We hire people with high agency and high urgency. We look for slope over intercept. We care less about where you trained and more about what you’ve built. At Ramp, everyone is a builder who owns problems end to end and makes consequential decisions that shape the outcome.
The median Ramp customer saves 5% and grows revenue 16% in their first year – far in excess of businesses operating without Ramp. We believe every ambitious company deserves the same.
If you want to build systems that directly shape how companies move and manage billions, Ramp is the place to do it.
About the Role
Getting paid is still one of the most manual parts of running a business. Finance teams chase invoices over email, match payments to invoices by hand in spreadsheets, and close the books late because cash data is scattered across banks, payment processors, and ERPs.
Ramp's Accounts Receivable team is building the system that automates all of it, from the moment an invoice is sent to the moment cash is reconciled in the general ledger. We own the full receivables lifecycle: invoicing, collections, payments, cash application, and accounting sync.
We're looking for a senior backend engineer to own core pieces of that system. The work sits where hard engineering problems meet real money: matching messy payment data to the right invoices, keeping ledgers correct to the cent, and syncing reliably with the accounting systems our customers depend on. You'll own projects end to end, from design through production, and work closely with product and design to turn complex finance workflows into software that just works.
What You’ll Do
Build the payment-matching systems that automatically apply incoming ACH, wire, card, and check payments to the right invoices, even when payment details are incomplete or inconsistent
Design accurate data models where every dollar is traceable from invoice to payment to general ledger
Build two-way integrations with ERPs like NetSuite and QuickBooks that stay consistent through retries, partial failures, and edits on either side
Build collections workflows that help businesses get paid faster without hurting their customer relationships
Own projects from problem definition and technical design through launch, monitoring, and iteration
Raise the engineering bar through design reviews, code reviews, and mentorship
What You’ll Need
Product sense: you care about the customer problem, not just the ticket, and you push back when the spec is wrong
Experience designing and operating production backend systems, including APIs, data models, and asynchronous workflows
Strong system design judgment and the ability to balance speed, correctness, reliability, and simplicity
A track record of independently owning complex projects and shipping high-quality software
Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to technical decisions
Nice to Haves
Experience with invoicing, billing, payments, accounting, or other financial workflows
Experience building integrations that keep data consistent across systems
Experience improving reliability and operational visibility in a growing product
