What you'll do.

Software Engineer III, Backend at Satispay is a mid-to-senior level role focused on designing and building scalable, high-quality backend systems for a fintech payment platform serving 6+ million users across Europe. This position requires 3+ years of Java development experience, cloud platform expertise (AWS preferred), and strong communication skills, with an emphasis on technical leadership, incident resolution, and supporting a complete user-focused product experience.

Responsibilities

  • Complete Story Lifecycle Ownership: Own and manage the entire story lifecycle from intake through production release, ensuring all product requirements are met and delivering features end-to-end with accountability for quality and timeliness.
  • Design Scalable Backend Systems: Design and implement robust, scalable backend solutions using Java and cloud technologies, conducting thorough technical analysis for standard-scope stories while maintaining high code quality and system performance standards.
  • Technical Leadership and Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to peers and junior engineers, ensuring service/component-level technical vision aligns with product roadmap while fostering knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Incident Management and Root Cause Analysis: Participate actively in incident resolution processes, perform root cause analysis on production issues, implement preventative measures, and maintain technical transparency across your system scope.
  • Technical Documentation and Stakeholder Communication: Create comprehensive technical documentation for implemented features, communicate progress to stakeholders, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and successful feature delivery.
  • Effort Estimation and Blocker Resolution: Accurately estimate engineering effort for assigned work items, identify and resolve blockers promptly, and maintain transparent communication about timelines and technical constraints.

Technical

  • Java Programming

    Minimum 3+ years of professional experience with Java, demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable code and design efficient backend solutions using Java frameworks and best practices.

  • Cloud Platform Expertise

    Foundational understanding of cloud platforms with AWS experience strongly preferred; experience with cloud-native architecture, containerization, and scalable infrastructure design.

  • Backend System Design

    Strong capability in designing scalable, distributed backend systems; experience with microservices architecture, API design, database optimization, and system reliability patterns.

  • Incident Response and Debugging

    Proven ability to diagnose and resolve production incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventative measures; strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.

Education

  • Computer Science or Related Field

    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional development experience demonstrating strong technical foundations.

  • Fintech or Payment Systems Knowledge

    Understanding of financial technology concepts, payment processing systems, and regulatory requirements in the fintech domain is highly valuable.

Experience

  • Professional Backend Development

    Minimum 3 years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated focus on backend systems, API development, and production-grade application delivery.

  • Startup or Fast-Paced Environment

    Experience working in startup environments or high-velocity tech companies where rapid iteration, ownership, and adaptability are essential to success.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

    Proven track record working effectively with product managers, data engineers, DevOps teams, and other technical stakeholders in collaborative delivery of complex features.

    Expert-level proficiency in Java with ability to architect and implement scalable backend solutions, write clean production code, and mentor others in Java best practices.

  • AWS Cloud Services

    Working knowledge of AWS services including EC2, RDS, Lambda, S3, and other managed services relevant to building scalable payment infrastructure.

  • Relational Databases

    Strong experience with SQL and relational database design, query optimization, transaction management, and data modeling for high-volume transaction processing.

  • REST API Design

    Proficiency in designing and implementing RESTful APIs following best practices for security, versioning, documentation, and scalability in distributed systems.

  • Problem Solving

    Demonstrated ability to analyze complex technical challenges, break them into manageable components, and implement effective solutions independently or with minimal guidance.

  • Communication Skills

    Clear, professional communication ability with the capacity to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in structured, convincing manner.

    Familiarity with message queue technologies such as RabbitMQ, Apache Kafka, or AWS SQS for building asynchronous, scalable backend systems.

  • Container Orchestration

As a Software Engineer III, Backend Developer, you’ll play a key role in shaping the future of digital payments by designing and building scalable, high-quality systems. Salary: €45,000 - €53,000 gross per annum

This range is set using objective, gender-neutral criteria for the role's core requirements. However, we do not believe in putting a ceiling on talent.
