What you'll do.

Join Airwallex's 12-week Software Engineering Intern Program as part of our diverse engineering team building the global payments and financial platform of the future. You'll own an end-to-end project while learning from industry-leading mentors, working with modern tech stack including Kotlin, Kafka, Kubernetes, and React, and exploring AI-assisted engineering workflows. Responsibilities

  • Own End-to-End Project Delivery: Design, develop, and deliver a scoped software engineering project from inception to completion during the 12-week internship program, applying modern software engineering fundamentals and best practices to build scalable, reliable solutions that integrate with Airwallex's payment and financial platform infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work alongside experienced engineers, product managers, and fintech specialists in a collaborative, fast-paced environment to solve high-visibility problems at scale. Contribute ideas to product roadmaps and actively participate in team discussions while learning industry best practices for building financial technology platforms.
  • Implement AI-Enhanced Engineering Practices: Leverage large language model (LLM) tools and AI-assisted workflows thoughtfully for research, prototyping, debugging, testing, and documentation. Apply critical judgment and strong fundamentals to evaluate AI-generated suggestions while maintaining code quality and security standards required in payments infrastructure.
  • Build Scalable Solutions with Modern Tech Stack: Develop software using Kotlin for backend services, React for frontend interfaces, and cloud-native technologies including Kafka for event streaming and Kubernetes for orchestration. Create simple yet scalable solutions that follow engineering best practices and support Airwallex's global platform serving 250,000+ businesses.
  • Learn Best-Practice Software Engineering: Absorb and apply software engineering fundamentals, pragmatic design patterns, and architectural principles from experienced Airwallex engineers. Participate in code reviews, receive mentorship on technical craftsmanship, and develop a strong foundation for tackling complex fintech challenges.
  • Present Project Outcomes and Learnings: Prepare and deliver a project showcase presentation to the engineering teams demonstrating the problem solved, technical approach taken, key learnings, and impact of your work. Articulate architectural decisions and insights gained from working with Airwallex's payment and treasury infrastructure.

Technical

  • Backend Development (Kotlin or Java)

    Experience with JVM-based languages such as Kotlin or Java for building robust backend services, APIs, and microservices that integrate with distributed systems and message queues.

  • Frontend Development (React or TypeScript)

    Practical experience building user interfaces with modern JavaScript frameworks, particularly React, with understanding of component-based architecture, state management, and responsive design principles.

  • Cloud-Native and DevOps Concepts

    Familiarity with containerization concepts, Kubernetes orchestration basics, distributed system architecture, and event-driven patterns using message brokers like Kafka for real-time data processing.

  • Version Control and Development Tools

    Proficiency with Git version control systems, CI/CD pipelines, and modern development tools. Understanding of code review practices and collaborative software development workflows.

  • AI-Assisted Development Tools

    Curiosity and hands-on experience with AI-powered coding assistants and LLM tools. Ability to evaluate AI-generated code critically, apply thoughtful judgment when incorporating AI suggestions, and stay informed about evolving AI models in software engineering.

Education

  • Penultimate or Final Year of Bachelor's Degree

    Currently enrolled in the penultimate or final year of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent computing discipline.

  • Master's or PhD Level Studies

    Alternatively, any stage of a Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent computing field.

  • Strong Communication Skills

    Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication abilities essential for collaborating with engineering teams, documenting code and decisions, and presenting technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Experience

  • Object-Oriented Programming Fundamentals

    Solid understanding and practical experience with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts including classes, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, and design patterns applicable to backend and frontend development.

  • Computing Fundamentals

    Strong grasp of core computer science concepts including data structures, algorithms, time/space complexity analysis, and basic system design principles relevant to building scalable applications.

  • Problem-Solving Mindset

    Demonstrated ability to think analytically, break down complex problems into manageable components, and apply first-principles thinking to develop solutions in fast-paced, dynamic environments.

    Engage in a technical interview with an Airwallex engineer where you solve coding problems in real-time, explain your approach, and discuss your reasoning. The interviewer evaluates your problem-solving methodology, code quality, testing mindset, and how you approach using AI tools alongside strong fundamentals. You may be asked to explain when and how you would use AI assistance versus solving problems independently.

    Meet with the hiring manager or team lead to discuss the specific project you would own during the internship, your career aspirations, and how you align with Airwallex's mission. What You'll Do

As an intern, you will be given an exciting and challenging project that you'll start in week 1. You'll join our structured Intern Program, be set up with a mentor and manager to make sure you have the best experience and that you are encouraged and supported to contribute. Most importantly, we want you to feel part of the team and learn lots while you are working with us!

Our leaders welcome all Airwallex people to contribute to our roadmap and to constantly challenge the processes that we build our platforms through. You'll get the opportunity to learn and apply best-practice software engineering, focusing on strong software engineering fundamentals and pragmatism from our engineers.

You will learn how AI can enhance strong engineering by using LLM tools for research, prototyping, debugging, testing and documentation, while applying critical judgement and strong fundamentals. Working on ambitious goals with a modern stack including Kotlin, Kafka, Kubernetes and React, you will help deliver simple, scalable solutions while exploring new models and tooling with your team.

Intern Program structure

  • 12 weeks over the Singapore University summer break (start early May to late Jul)

  • 1st week in a structured induction

  • 3 Program Review / Check-Ins across the 12 week program

  • 1 Intern scoped Project to own end to end

  • 1 Project Showcase to present back to our Teams on what you built
