The role

Summary

Benchling seeks an experienced Engineering Leader to lead the critical Admin & Identity Platform team, responsible for core authentication, authorization, and security systems. The ideal candidate will drive platform reliability, develop sophisticated identity management solutions, and lead a team of engineers in building foundational infrastructure for Benchling's biotechnology R&D cloud platform.

What you'll do

Team Leadership: Recruit, develop, and lead a team of exceptional software engineers, focusing on growing early-to-mid career engineers into impactful leaders
Strategic Planning: Develop and execute quarterly plans with clear metrics, translating strategic vision into actionable roadmaps for product development and infrastructure maintenance
Product Strategy: Partner closely with product management and design to define short- and long-term product strategy, with a focus on authentication and identity platform capabilities
Technical Governance: Ensure high-quality technical decisions, maintain rigorous standards for product quality, and guide the team in building scalable platform foundations
Customer Engagement: Directly engage with customers to understand their scientific needs and how Benchling's identity platform can support their requirements
Organizational Development: Contribute to engineering-wide improvements as part of the management team, driving continuous organizational enhancement

What we look for

Technical

Authentication ProtocolsDeep understanding of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, and other industry-standard authentication protocols
Platform EngineeringExperience building shared infrastructure teams that serve both internal engineering and external user needs
Security SystemsProven track record in designing and managing security-sensitive systems, particularly in authentication and authorization domains

Education

Technical DegreeBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Engineering ManagementMinimum 4 years of experience as an engineering manager
Software EngineeringMinimum 5 years of software engineering experience, with technical lead experience on multi-quarter, multi-engineer projects
Cross-Functional CollaborationDemonstrated ability to work effectively with product, design, sales, and marketing teams
