Summary

Benchling is seeking an experienced Security Engineer to join their innovative biotechnology software team in San Francisco. The role involves leading complex security infrastructure projects, developing robust security tools, and collaborating across engineering teams to safeguard sensitive scientific data in their R&D cloud platform.

What you'll do

Security Infrastructure Development: Lead architecture and development of security tools and infrastructure, owning complex projects end-to-end from planning through delivery
Cloud Security Management: Collaborate with Product Security and Software Engineers to design and implement security features and controls in AWS cloud infrastructure
Security Detection and Response: Support security detection efforts by contributing to detections, automation, and investigations of potential security threats
Technology Evaluation: Research, evaluate, and advocate for new security tools, assessing their potential impact and alignment with Benchling's security requirements
Process Development: Define and operationalize processes for data mining, modeling, and production to establish security engineering standards
Team Mentorship: Mentor Security Engineers by providing technical guidance, conducting code reviews, and supporting career development

What we look for

Technical

Cloud InfrastructureDeep expertise in AWS cloud infrastructure and security services, ability to architect complex multi-service solutions
Infrastructure TechnologiesProficiency with modern infrastructure technologies including Docker, Terraform, CloudFormation, and Kinesis

Education

Computer ScienceBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or related technical field preferred

Experience

Security Engineering7+ years of experience in Security Engineering with comprehensive exposure to various security tools and technologies

Skills

Required skills

AWS SecurityComprehensive understanding of AWS cloud security services and infrastructure
Software EngineeringStrong software engineering skills with ability to design maintainable systems
Cross-functional CollaborationProven ability to work effectively across engineering teams and manage stakeholders

Nice to have

Technical LeadershipExperience as a technical leader on a security team, either formally or informally
Process ImprovementTrack record of defining and operationalizing team processes, standards, or best practices
