The role

Summary

Join Clipboard's Applied Science team as a Software Engineer to build quantitative systems powering our healthcare marketplace. This role combines software engineering expertise with data science and marketplace economics knowledge, focusing on pricing algorithms, auction mechanisms, ML infrastructure, and core business metrics. You'll work across the full stack using TypeScript, React, Node/NestJS, MongoDB, and Postgres while partnering with product teams to solve complex problems at scale.

What you'll do

Design and Implement Pricing Algorithms: Architect and develop sophisticated pricing algorithms and dynamic auction mechanisms that optimize marketplace efficiency, ensure competitive pricing for healthcare staffing, and maximize value capture while maintaining platform equilibrium across supply and demand.
Build Marketplace Metrics Infrastructure: Own the end-to-end development of shared marketplace metrics systems, including automated variance detection, real-time notification systems, and alerting frameworks that provide critical business intelligence to leadership and product teams.
Develop Causal Analytics and Experimentation Frameworks: Build robust causal modeling systems, A/B testing infrastructure, and analytical investigation tools that enable data-driven decision-making and help teams understand root causes behind key performance indicators and marketplace dynamics.
Partner on ML Pipeline Development: Collaborate with platform and data teams to develop, deploy, and maintain machine learning pipelines, rules engines, and predictive models that power core marketplace functionality and improve matching efficiency between healthcare professionals and facilities.
Solve End-to-End System Architecture Challenges: Take ownership of complex architectural problems across the full technology stack, from database optimization and backend scalability to frontend performance and real-time data synchronization, ensuring systems handle millions of transactions reliably.
Conduct Data-Driven Analysis and Insights: Deeply investigate marketplace metrics and KPIs, dig into data to identify trends and anomalies, reason through cause-and-effect relationships, and translate analytical findings into actionable product recommendations and engineering solutions.

What we look for

Technical

Full-Stack Development ProficiencyDemonstrated experience building complete systems from frontend to backend, comfortable working across multiple layers of the technology stack including database design, API development, and user-facing interfaces.
Backend Systems DesignStrong expertise in designing scalable, reliable backend systems capable of handling high transaction volumes, with experience in distributed systems, caching strategies, database optimization, and performance tuning.
Data Analysis and SQL ExpertiseProficiency writing complex SQL queries, analyzing large datasets, understanding query performance, and extracting meaningful insights from data. Comfortable translating business questions into analytical queries and interpreting results.
Algorithms and Quantitative ReasoningStrong foundation in algorithmic thinking, mathematical modeling, and quantitative problem-solving. Ability to reason about optimization problems, auction theory, pricing mechanics, and marketplace economics.
TypeScript and Node.js DevelopmentProfessional experience with TypeScript for type-safe development, Node.js runtime, and modern backend frameworks. Familiarity with NestJS patterns for building scalable applications is highly valuable.
Database TechnologiesWorking knowledge of both relational databases (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL solutions (MongoDB), understanding trade-offs between different data models, indexing strategies, and when to apply each technology.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Related FieldFormal education in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline providing strong foundational knowledge in algorithms, data structures, and systems design.
Advanced Mathematics or Statistics KnowledgeUnderstanding of statistics, probability, linear algebra, or optimization theory is valuable for working on pricing algorithms, causal modeling, and quantitative systems.

Experience

Software Engineering Background3-7 years of professional software engineering experience building production systems, with demonstrated ability to take projects from design through implementation and deployment at scale.
Marketplace or Platform Economics ExperiencePrior experience working with marketplace dynamics, two-sided platforms, pricing mechanisms, or platform economics. Understanding of how marketplaces balance supply and demand is a significant advantage.
Data Science or Analytics IntegrationExperience building systems that integrate machine learning models, working with analytics teams, or developing features that rely on data-driven insights and statistical analysis.
Remote-First CollaborationProven success working in distributed, asynchronous-first remote teams, demonstrating strong written communication skills, self-motivation, and ability to unblock independently.

Skills

Required skills

TypeScriptProfessional proficiency with TypeScript for type-safe, maintainable backend and full-stack development with modern language features and strict typing.
Node.js and Backend FrameworksStrong experience with Node.js runtime and backend frameworks, particularly NestJS for building scalable, maintainable APIs and services with clear architectural patterns.
SQL and Database DesignExpert-level SQL proficiency including complex queries, query optimization, schema design, and understanding of relational database concepts essential for building data-driven systems.
PostgreSQL and MongoDBWorking knowledge of both PostgreSQL (relational, ACID-compliant) and MongoDB (document-oriented, flexible schema), understanding when and how to apply each technology effectively.
Problem-Solving and DebuggingSystematic approach to identifying root causes, debugging complex issues, profiling performance bottlenecks, and implementing robust solutions with proper error handling and monitoring.
System Design and ArchitectureAbility to design systems for scalability, reliability, and maintainability, considering trade-offs between different architectural approaches and making decisions based on requirements and constraints.

Nice to have

React and Frontend DevelopmentExperience with React for building user interfaces and understanding frontend architecture, particularly valuable given the team's full-stack ownership model and use of React in production.
Pricing Algorithm and Auction Theory KnowledgeFamiliarity with dynamic pricing models, auction mechanisms, bidding strategies, or marketplace matching algorithms demonstrates domain knowledge highly relevant to core team responsibilities.
