The role

Summary

As a Software Engineer II at Hims & Hers, you will design and implement moderately complex, scalable backend solutions for the Patient Health Data Platform, working independently on well-scoped projects within a collaborative squad environment. This role requires 3+ years of production software engineering experience, with strong expertise in distributed systems, microservice architectures, cloud infrastructure (AWS/Kubernetes), and modern backend technologies including Node.js, Kotlin, and PostgreSQL. You'll contribute to architectural decisions, mentor junior engineers, drive technical quality through code reviews, and help establish best practices for testing, observability, and operational excellence in a mission-driven healthcare platform.

What you'll do

Design and Build Scalable Backend Solutions: Design and implement medium-complexity, maintainable backend solutions that meet product requirements while adhering to SOLID and DRY principles. Focus on creating distributed systems and microservices that scale efficiently and maintain code quality throughout the development lifecycle.
Technical Design and Documentation: Author clear, well-structured technical design documents that align your squad and guide implementation. Incorporate feedback as designs evolve, ensuring architectural decisions are well-documented and communicated across the team and beyond.
Code Quality and Testing Leadership: Write modular, reusable, and testable code while enforcing squad testing standards including unit, integration, end-to-end, and manual testing. Provide constructive code review feedback with consistent attention to conventions, functionality, and test coverage to maintain high development standards.
Technical Debt Management: Take ownership of identifying, prioritizing, and addressing technical debt within your systems. Balance technical debt fixes against feature work, proposing solutions that improve long-term maintainability and system health.
Product Discovery and Validation: Participate in product discovery sessions to assess feature feasibility, explore user needs, and validate ideas through prototypes and experiments. Bridge engineering and product perspectives to ensure technical solutions align with user requirements.
System Integration and Communication: Collaborate with other engineers to ensure clean integration and communication across distributed systems and microservices. Maintain clear boundaries between services and facilitate effective cross-team coordination.
Observability and Performance Management: Implement basic observability practices including logging, monitoring, and alerting for all developed systems. Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and reliability issues proactively, ensuring production systems maintain high availability.
Project Planning and Delivery: Break down medium-complexity projects into clear, actionable tasks and drive them from planning through production delivery. Seek guidance when blocked and maintain steady progress with accountability for outcomes.
Performance Analysis and Continuous Improvement: Analyze performance metrics and user feedback to identify improvement opportunities. Propose and implement optimizations that enhance system efficiency and user experience across the Patient Health Data Platform.
Knowledge Sharing and Mentorship: Share technical knowledge with peers, mentor junior engineers and interns on fundamental technical skills, and actively suggest improvements to squad workflows and tools. Contribute to the hiring process through technical interviews and candidate evaluation.

Technical

Backend Distributed Systems3+ years of production experience contributing to backend distributed systems and services, with demonstrated understanding of scalability, reliability, and fault tolerance patterns in cloud-native environments.
Microservice ArchitectureStrong familiarity with microservice architecture patterns, service decomposition, inter-service communication, and handling of distributed transactions and eventual consistency challenges.
Cloud Infrastructure and OrchestrationWorking experience deploying and hosting microservices and applications on AWS and Kubernetes, including container orchestration, scaling policies, and cloud-native operational patterns.

CI/CD and Automated TestingHands-on experience with CI/CD processes and pipeline automation, including implementation of automated unit and integration tests. Familiarity with testing frameworks and infrastructure-as-code practices.
Problem-Solving and Trade-off AnalysisStrong analytical and critical thinking skills with demonstrated ability to evaluate trade-offs between performance, cost, and system complexity. Comfortable making informed architectural decisions in ambiguous situations.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Computer ScienceBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field preferred, or equivalent professional software engineering experience demonstrating deep technical competency.

Production Software EngineeringMinimum 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of shipping production code and managing systems at scale. Demonstrated growth from junior to mid-level engineering capabilities.
Agile Software DevelopmentExperience working in agile software development methodologies and iterative delivery practices, collaborating within cross-functional squads to ship features incrementally.
Collaborative Engineering CultureProven ability to work effectively within engineering teams, demonstrate strong communication skills, adapt to ambiguity, and take ownership of work with minimal supervision. Track record of mentoring junior engineers.
