The role

Summary

Sr. Software Engineer, Patient Platform (Backend) at Hims & Hers is a senior technical leadership role focused on designing and implementing scalable, high-performance backend systems for the Patient Health Data Platform serving both patient and provider experiences. You'll lead architectural decisions across microservices and distributed systems, mentor engineering teams on best practices, and drive technical initiatives that enhance security, scalability, and reliability in a healthcare technology environment.

What you'll do

Architecting Backend Systems: Lead the design and architecture of scalable and performant backend solutions that meet product requirements, enhance platform experience, and support millions of patient interactions across Hims & Hers' digital health ecosystem.
Technical Mentorship and Leadership: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers on best practices, design patterns, coding standards, and architectural principles, while modeling a culture of open communication and continuous improvement.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and communication across microservices, and participate in product discovery sessions to assess feasibility and validate ideas with prototypes and experiments.
System Reliability and Observability: Implement comprehensive observability practices including logging, monitoring, and alerting across the platform to ensure system reliability, performance, and rapid incident detection and response.
Performance Optimization: Analyze performance metrics and user feedback to identify bottlenecks, propose optimization enhancements, and drive systematic improvements to system performance and reliability.
Technical Strategy and Innovation: Contribute to the platform vision as a technical leader by identifying new and strategic technologies, evaluating technical investments, and proposing innovative solutions that improve security, scalability, and reliability.
Code Quality and Documentation: Conduct code reviews, create and maintain technical documentation for architecture and development processes, and elevate team engineering standards by improving workflows and tools.
Hiring and Onboarding: Actively participate in the hiring process by conducting technical interviews, assessing engineering talent, and contributing to the onboarding and integration of new team members.

What we look for

Technical

Distributed System Design and Development3+ years of hands-on experience designing, developing, and delivering distributed backend systems, including experience with system performance optimization, failure handling, and scalability considerations.
Microservices Architecture3+ years of production experience building and maintaining microservice-based architectures, including service decomposition, inter-service communication, and API design patterns.
Kubernetes and AWS DeploymentProven proficiency with containerization and orchestration using Kubernetes, along with cloud infrastructure experience on AWS for deploying scalable backend services and microservices.
Relational Database ManagementStrong experience with relational databases and SQL, with proficiency in PostgreSQL including schema design, query optimization, and transaction management.
CI/CD Pipeline ImplementationComprehensive experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment processes, including automated unit testing, end-to-end integration testing, and deployment automation.
Backend ProgrammingExpert-level proficiency in one or more backend programming languages commonly used for distributed systems, with ability to write maintainable, performant production code.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Computer ScienceBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field preferred.
Equivalent Professional ExperienceEquivalent professional software engineering experience demonstrating mastery of computer science fundamentals and production system design principles.

Experience

Senior-Level Software Engineering Experience5+ years of professional software engineering experience shipping production code, with demonstrated impact on system architecture and technical decisions.
Scalable Web Application DevelopmentProven experience building scalable web applications and services operating in production environments, preferably in cloud-native settings serving significant user bases.
Agile Development MethodologyExperience working with agile software development and delivery practices, including sprint planning, iterative development, and cross-functional collaboration.
Strategic Problem-SolvingDemonstrated ability to think critically and strategically about technical problems, break down complex projects into actionable tasks, and prioritize multiple initiatives independently.
